HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform administrator guide (5697-0109, July 2009)

5. Run ioscan on all HP-UX hosts.
6. Right-click on HP-UX UDHs and set the hosts to online.
Linux servers
It may be necessary to reboot the Linux server to allow the discovery of HBAs by the VSM application.
VMware servers
To discover a new SVSP virtual disk:
1. Launch the Virtual Infrastructure client.
2. Select the ESX server to which you have presented a new virtual disk.
3. Select the Configuration tab.
4. On the left side, under Hardware, select Storage Adapters.
5. Near the top, right window, click Rescan.
6. In the Rescan dialog box, select the Scan for Storage Devices and Scan for New VMFS Volumes
checkboxes and click OK. The bottom half of the window displays new LUN information that
includes the path.
7. Follow the VMware instructions to create a DATASTORE and to make the newly discovered virtual
disk visible to a guest operating system.
Windows servers
Use Disk Manager to discover and initialize the new devices.
Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service
The Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) captures and copies stable images for backup on running
systems, particularly servers, without unduly degrading the performance and stability of the services
they provide.
The VSS solution is designed to enable developers to create services (writers) that can be effectively
backed up by any vendor's backup application using VSS (requesters). A VSS requester has been
provided with the install to enable VSS to take advantage of unique SVSP features. Following is a
brief overview of VSS capabilities and features. More information is available from the following link:

The VSS model
The Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) is a storage management interface for Microsoft
Windows Server 2003 and 2008. VSS enables your storage system to interact with third-party
applications that use the VSS application programming interface (API).
The SVSP VSS hardware provider is a Windows service (exe). The Microsoft VSS attaches to the
service and uses the service to coordinate the creation of snapshots (PiTs) on the virtual disks presented
by the DPM. You can initiate VSS-initiated snapshots through third-party backup tools known as
requestors.
The VSS model includes the following:
