HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform administrator guide (5697-0109, July 2009)

Boot from SAN with Windows Server
1. Connect one port of the server HBA to a front-end switch.
2. Power on the server and enter the HBA BIOS settings menu.
3. Configure all HBA ports:
a. Enable the Target Reset option.
b. Disable the Enable LIP Reset.
c. Disable the Enable LIP Full login.
4. For one HBA port, enable the Boot BIOS.
5. Configure a boot zone for the server. This zone should include only one path between the host
and the DPM.
6. Log in to the DPM using the kadmin username and issue the command show debug wwpn. The
DPM should see the boot HBA.
7. Log in to VSM GUI and add a host with an assigned HBA.
8. Create a virtual disk with the size of 30 GB. Add a UDH permission to the host.
9. Go to the HBA BIOS, scan the SAN devices, and check that one DPM port is listed.
10. Set the boot device in the HBA BIOS. This is a combination of the DPM WWNN and the LUN
assigned to the VSM volume. Save the settings and reboot the server.
11. Launch the Windows 2008 Enterprise Edition installation process. When requested for the
destination for the operating system, select the VSM volume virtualized by the OS. It will have
the same LU number set through the VSM GUI and the same capacity as the VSM volume.
Complete the operating system installation.
12. Install or update the latest QLogic HBA driver. Reboot the server.
13. Install the multipathing host software (and failover driver). Reboot the server.
14. When a Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file message
appears on the Windows Boot Manager screen, press Enter, followed by F8. Choose Disable
Driver Signature Enforcement. (To prevent repeating these actions, you can run following command
from a command prompt: Bcdedit.exe -set TESTSIGNING ON).
15. Verify that the host appears in the VSM GUI host list.
16. Add the second host HBA to the original zone from step 5. The host should now see all required
front-end ports of both DPMs.
17. Log in to the DPM using the kadmin username and issue the command show debug wwpn. The
DPM included in the zone should see the second port HBA.
18. Go to the VSM GUI and add the second HBA to the host. Both must be in present state.
19. Restart the host, go to the HBA BIOS, and set the boot device to use the other DPM's front-end
port.
