12 Managing host bus adapters
Each VSM server detects the host bus adapters (HBAs) installed on itself and the HBAs reported by
the DPMs on the SAN. When more than one node (DPM or VSM) reports the same HBA to the VSM
server, the VSM server has more than one access path to the HBA. When a user creates a user-defined
host (UDH) and adds the HBA to the UDH, the VSM server learns that the HBA belongs to the UDH.
This chapter describes the information you can view about HBAs detected on the SAN, and some
operations you can perform on the HBAs.
You can:
View the HBAs list (view a list of all HBAs detected on the SAN)
View HBA information (view information about each HBA)
Add HBAs to hosts (add HBAs to a host in situations in which VSM cannot learn automatically
that an HBA has been added to the host)
Remove HBAs from hosts (remove HBAs from a host to inform VSM that a given HBA is no longer
installed on a given host)
Delete HBAs (delete HBAs when they are physically absent and will not be replaced)
Delete access paths to HBAs (delete access paths to HBAs when they are physically down and
will not be restored)
Viewing the HBAs list
The HBAs list displays all HBAs detected on the SAN by either the DPM or the VSM. These include:
HBAs on the VSM server to which you are connected
HBAs on other VSM servers directly connected to the local fabric
HBAs on remote VSM servers recognized through iSCSI
Host HBAs reported by DPMs
HBAs connected to back-end DPM ports, through which the VSM server detects DPMs
NOTE:
Zoning is expected to reduce the number of HBAs in the list.
To view the HBAs list:
1. In the navigation tree, expand the Entities node.
