HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform Manager User Guide (5697-0454, May 2010)

CAUTION:
When a snapshot or VDG snapshot is deleted, the hosts that use it lose access to the snapshot or
VDG snapshot. It is therefore recommended that you unmount the snapshot or VDG snapshot on
the host prior to deleting it on VSM. When a snapshot or VDG snapshot is deleted, all the data
modifications that the snapshot or VDG snapshot maintained are lost. The temporary virtual disks
allocated to store this data are deleted, and the capacity returns to the storage pools from which
they were allocated.
When deleting a VSS snapshot from within VSM, you are prompted with a confirmation message
indicating that the snapshot was created by VSS. Confirming the deletion deletes both the VSS
snapshot and its VSS PiTs. For more information about VSS snapshots, see Working with VSS
snapshots and PiTs on page 234.
To delete a snapshot or VDG snapshot:
1. Right-click the snapshot.
2. Select Delete. A confirmation message appears.
3. Click Finish. The snapshots status changes to delete. When the deletion is complete, the snapshot
disappears from the snapshots list.
Working with VSS snapshots and PiTs
VSM is compatible with Microsofts Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and enables you to view
VSS objects within VSM. You cannot create VSS objects using VSM.
Displaying VSS snapshots and PiTs
To display VSS snapshots and their PiTs within VSM:
1. From the toolbar, select Tools > Options > General. The Options window appears displaying
the Data Presentation tab.
2. Select the Show VSS Views checkbox and click OK. The Options window closes and VSS snapshots
and PiTs are now displayed within VSS.
NOTE:
For hosts running Windows 2008, VSM supports the following operations:
You can convert VSS PiTs to regular PiTs.
You can grant read-write permission for VSS snapshots in the operating system.
Recognizing VSS snapshots and PiTs in VSM
VSS PiTs are indicated by a Yes in the Belongs to VSS column.
