22 Managing security and users
The VSM client provides a trusted and secure computing platform that enables you to protect your
information from a wide range of threats. Users and user groups can only perform actions that
administrators give them permissions to perform. Permission templates enable you to easily copy
security permissions to entities, users, and user groups.
The VSM client has a default user account with the user name admin. The initial password for this
account is admin, and the password should be changed during installation. This user has full permission
to access and manage all entities. This user is automatically a member of the administrators user
group. The administrators user group is predefined so that any user that you create and add to this
group automatically shares full access permission. There are other predefined user groups that also
automatically define a level of permission to members.
You can also create users without adding them to groups and you can create user groups for the
purpose of easily defining identical permissions to all group members.
Permissions are defined per user and per entity. A users level of permission can be set differently for
every entity. Every entity can have different permissions defined for different users.
Permissions can be defined in permission templates so that you can reuse sets of permissions by
applying the permission templates to entities.
