HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform Manager User Guide (5697-0454, May 2010)

Creates backup space on another back-end LU from a specified storage pool to hold data that
will be displaced from the back-end LU to make space for a VSM signature.
Displaces some data to the backup space and writes a VSM signature to the back-end LU.
Configures the imported back-end LU as a member of the same specified storage pool.
Imports the data to a new, fully manageable, standard VSM virtual disk with a specified name.
Use the hosts operating system with VSM for a complete import procedure, including all the tasks
you need to perform on the host side. The complete procedure includes unmounting the host that is
using the back-end LU, running Import-in-Place on the back-end LU, and mounting the resulting virtual
disk on the host.
If the host is using multiple back-end LUs as a concatenated entity, such as an HP-UX virtual disk group,
you need to import each back-end LU separately to a VSM virtual disk, and then reconstruct the entity
on the host operating system from the VSM virtual disks. See an OS user manual for using the hostss
operating system with VSM for information.
CAUTION:
After performing an Import-in-Place, make sure the LUN is not mounted by the VSM server. If the
LUN can be accessed by both the VSM server and the original host, data corruption can result. If the
imported LUN is mounted to the VSM server, use the MountVol D:\ /P command on every LUN,
where D is the drive letter assigned to the mounted LUN.
For information about reversing a back-end LU import, see Reversing Import-in-Place (performing
Export-in-Place) on page 59. Reversing an import is an export-in-place.
To import a back-end LUs data to a virtual disk:
1. Right-click the back-end LU that you want to import.
2. Select Manage > Import-in-Place. The Import-in-Place wizard opens to the Enter parameters screen.
3. In the Virtual Disk name field, enter a name for the new virtual disk that will be created to hold
the imported data.
4. In the Comment field, enter any text you want.
