HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform administrator guide (5697-8056, March 2009)

5. Configure the SCSI personality.
A SCSI personality defines the way in which the DPM (acting as storage system controllers) reacts
to certain SCSI commands coming from the ESX server, especially with regard to virtual disk
failover. The correct SCSI personality to use with VMware ESX Server is the HP EVA personality.
6. Assign the virtual disk with the same LUN number to all ESX servers that are part of the VMware
cluster (or to a specific standalone ESX server in not in the VMware cluster).
VMware ESX server
After configuring the appropriate zones, create the virtual disks on the VSM and assign them to the
VMware ESX servers. The VMware ESX server can now scan these virtual disks and use them as
DATASTORES or raw (RDM) VM virtual disks. Before scanning and creating the DATASTORE there
are some advanced configurations steps:
1. Using the VMware VI client GUI, choose the ESX server, select the Configuration tab, and then
click the Advance Settings link. On the left menu window choose Disk.
Disk.UseDeviceReset—Make sure this setting is set to 0. This setting forces VMware to not
send a target reset to the DPM port when initiating a failover, allowing the failover to be done
on a more granular, per-LUN basis (see Disk.UseLunReset below).
Disk.UseLunReset—Make sure this setting is set to 1. This setting forces VMware to send a
LUN reset when initiating a failover.
