HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform Best Practices Guide (5697-0935, May 2011)

There are ways in which ThP can reduce the cost of ownership and significantly accelerate return
on investment (ROI):
NotesDescriptionAdvantage
Smooth implementation of logical virtual disk system without
physical format
Logical virtual disk design independent of physical
configuration
Actual capacity design independent of logical virtual disk
configuration
Simplified virtual disk
design
Dependent on a particular
host environment.
Implementation of large capacity virtual disks for reasonable
disk capacity cost.
Increased cost for storage
implementation
Configuring ThP onSVSP—points to note
When configuring ThP on the SVSP, you should:
Create a storage pool to supply the allocated capacity and enough space for the free capacity.
Set up individual capacity alerts for the virtual disk and global alerts for the pool.
Why? The individual capacity alert may be set low initially and may be used to monitor the
growth of the virtual disk. The global alerts for the storage pool allow the pool to be monitored.
For better performance, expand the storage pool capacity before it reaches the warning level.
Why? Once the storage pool reaches warning levels, actions are initiated by SVSP to conserve
pool free space. These actions will disrupt normal events in the system.
Create ThP storage pools based on performance expectations and by application type
(production vs. testing). Also, by operating system and file system.
Why? This enables better performance predictability, storage pool life, space manageability,
and space allocation dependability.
Place the ThP virtual disks in folders or signify in the name that these are ThP virtual disks apart
from the traditional virtual disks.
Why? This is for simplified identification and administration. Similarly, the snapshot virtual
disks should follow the same principal.
Prepare a host computer with a SNMP agent.
Why? This is to have a recipient for the ThP alarms when a threshold is exceeded. E-mail is
another option.
