HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform SMI-S User Guide (5697-0209, April 2010)

10 Copy Services Profile
Profile introduction
This VSM server Profile partially implements the SMI-S 1.4 Copy Services Component Profile for the
purpose of supporting legacy clients.
The provided functionality encompasses simple single copy, local SVSP domain management of
snapshots, synchronous and asynchronous mirroring, and copy in the VSM server.
For the full VSM functionality use the Replication Services Profile.
The following profiles are related to this one:

Block Services
Job Control
Functional description
The provided functionality encompasses simple single copy, local SVSP domain management of
snapshots, synchronous and asynchronous mirroring, and copy in the VSM server. However it does
not include support for these customary VSM features:
Direct PiT manipulation such as Create PiT and Rollback
Multiple mirrors from a source virtual disk
Multiple snapshots for a virtual disk PiT
Multiple copies from a source virtual disk
Virtual disk groups
Remote inter-domain operations
Migration
For the full VSM functionality use the Replication Services Profile.
The Copy Services Profile defines a model for mirror management, snapshot management and copy
management. The primary Copy Services management interface is the StorageConfigurationService,
which adds additional requirements to those defined in the Block Services Profile.
Specifically, this profile provides limited support for the VSM snapshot, mirror (both synchronous and
asynchronous), and snapclone.
It implements the legacy Copy Services methods from StorageConfigurationService but not the local
functionality of the experimental Replication Services methods.
Since Copy Services does not support groups or PiTs, the functionality of these is limited to one target
object per source virtual disk.
Snapshots are supported using the subset of Copy Services states show in the following state diagram:
