HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform Administrator Guide (5697-0934, May 2011)

disk failover. The correct SCSI personality to use with VMware ESX Server is the HP EVA 3000
personality.
6. Assign the virtual disk with the same LUN number to all ESX servers that are part of the VMware
cluster by using the hosts group feature.
VMware ESX server
After configuring the appropriate zones, create the virtual disks on the VSM and assign them to
the VMware ESX servers. The VMware ESX server can now scan these virtual disks and use them
as Datastores or Raw Device Mapped (RDM) virtual disks. Before scanning and creating the
Datastore there are some configurations settings are needed.
Advanced settings
Using the VMware vCenter GUI, choose the ESX server, select the Configuration tab, and then
click the Advanced Settings link. On the left menu window choose Disk.
Disk.UseDeviceReset—Make sure this setting is set to 0. This setting forces VMware to not
send a target reset to the DPM port when initiating a failover, allowing the failover to be done
on a more granular, per-LUN basis (see Disk.UseLunReset below).
Disk.UseLunReset—Make sure this setting is set to 1. This setting forces VMware to send a
LUN reset when initiating a failover.
Disk.MaxLUN—Set the value close to the number of LUNs in use to avoid long SCSI scans
and reboots. The value must be higher than the number of physical LUNs presented to the ESX
hosts.
Repeat these steps for each ESX server in the environment.
