HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform Administrator Guide (5697-0934, May 2011)

For best operation, use a backup application to back up this folder to another disk or tape.
CAUTION: Possible loss of data access—You can safely restore the VSM setup database from
backup only if the system does not have PiTs. If PiTs exist, either created by users or create by multi
applications, the metadata for the PiTs is in the setup backup. The metadata in the setup backup
might be invalid and can result in the loss of data access if restored.
You are given the option to restore the setup database when VSM is started in safe mode. When
starting the VSM in safe mode for recovery purposes, the VSM must be the only VSM that manages
the domain. You must disconnect the second VSM or turn off the power to the second VSM before
starting the first VSM in safe mode.
You can start the VSM in safe mode from VSM monitor. To start the VSM in safe mode, in the VSM
monitor select the Recovery tab. After the VSM starts in safe mode, the VSM opens a command
prompt window for an interactive interface with the user.
CAUTION: The recovery interface enables you to perform some recovery operations that can be
destructive. Before using safe mode and attempting to recover the VSM setup database, contact
your HP Support representative.
Backing up and restoring the DPM configuration
The most important information on the DPM is the following:
Port configuration and information:
Target or initiator
Speed
WWPN
Host name/IP
Licenses
Serial number
To help you a quickly recover from a failed DPM, save this information to a backup configuration
file. To save this information to a backup configuration file, perform these steps:
1. Login to the DPM as admin.
2. Type this command and press Enter.
save config <file name>
where <file name> is the name of the file that contains the DPM information. The command
appends the software version to the filename. For example:
save config yk
creates a configuration file with the name of yk_2.0.5-05d.config.
The file is automatically saved in /common/images/configs.
For additional backup protection, use an SFTP or an SCP utility to copy the saved configuration
file to an external host.
To restore the backup configuration file, perform these steps:
1. Login to the DPM as admin.
2. To upload the saved config file you want use, type this command and press Enter.
load config <file name>
where <file name> is the name of the configuration file that you saved using the save config
command. The configuration file is retrieved from /common/ images/configs.
