HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform Administrator Guide (5697-0934, May 2011)

Monitoring license use
To monitor license use, routinely check the License dialog box with the VSM GUI. The access the
dialog box, click Tools > License (see “License dialog box” (page 17)).
Monitoring capacity utilization
To monitor pool utilization, use the VSM GUI as described in the “Working with storage pools
chapter in the HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Service Platform Manager User Guide.
Monitoring event logs
Use the VSM GUI to view and configure event logs. See the “Using the VSM event viewer” chapter
in the HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Service Platform Manager User Guide.
Monitoring the SAN
Monitor all switches within the SAN for CRC errors, dropped frames, BB Credits exhaustion, and
other indicators of congestion using the performance monitoring tools that come with the switch.
Make adjustments to resolve any issues with congestion or faulty fabric components. Pay close
attention to fabric statistics for inter-switch links, since these are often the first areas where congestion
will show up. SAN visibility should be used to ensure that the actual fabric performance is what
was intended.
NOTE: If the two fabrics are from different vendors, two sets of switch-monitoring tools should
be expected.
Switches frequently provide notification when a link reaches a saturation level. It may be helpful
in your environment to set up warnings as links reach saturation values.
Pool monitoring
There are global and individual mechanisms to ensure that operations are not curtailed because
a pool is running out of free capacity.
Global mechanisms
Warning (10% free)
Notification to event log every 5 minutes
Delete oldest asynchronous mirror PiTs
Keep most recent asynchronous mirror PiT
Guard (5% free)
Suspend asynchronous mirror tasks
Delete most recent PiT
