HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform administrator guide (5697-0204, January 2010)

Deleting back-end LUs
1. Follow the Deleting or reusing capacity procedure above to first identify all affected virtual disks.
2. Delete the PiTs and snapshots associated with those virtual disks.
3. Delete the pool and any associated stripes sets.
4. At this point, it is possible to unpresent and delete the back-end LU.
Deleting front-end virtual disks and hosts
1. Stop all applications using the virtual disks.
2. Follow the Deleting or reusing capacity procedure above to identify all virtual disks.
3. Delete the PiTs and snapshots associated with those virtual disks.
4. Using the VSM GUI, delete the virtual disks and the servers that were using the virtual disks.
If the server is being removed from the domain, disconnect the server from the SAN. Using the VSM
GUI, delete the HBAs associated with the server.
Retiring an array
Before removing an array or removing capacity, you may want to migrate the data. If you choose to
migrate the data off the array, you need to mount the backup copy (source copy) of the data to a
server for formatting or overwriting, such that the old array does not contain residual data from before
the migration. The formatting does not need to be performed by the same operating system that
maintained the data, because the purpose of the overwrite is to prevent data scavenging.
Make sure that all SVSP used capacity has been released by SVSP before detaching the array from
the SAN.
To retire or replace an array:
1. Using the VSM GUI, find all back-end LUs and stripe sets in the VSM that are presented to the
domain by the array to be removed.
2. For each identified pool, use the VSM GUI to find each virtual disk that uses that pool, and stop
any PiTs or snapshots associated with the virtual disks.
3. Stop all applications using the virtual disks to be deleted.
4. Unpresent all virtual disks from the servers, preferably by first stopping the I/O.
5. Delete the virtual disks.
6. Reselect the pool, and use the virtual disk tab to verify that no virtual disks are using the pool.
7. Delete the pool.
8. Delete any stripe sets used to create any part of the pool.
9. Remove all DPM-to-array and VSM server-to-array zone sets.
10. Turn off power to the array and detach it from the SAN.
