5 Removing devices from the domain
This chapter provides a set of steps or checklists for what is to be done when deleting objects or
devices from the domain. See the referenced material to get the exact steps needed to perform the
indicated action.
Deleting or reusing capacity
In general, the process of deleting virtual disks is the reverse or opposite of the process used to create
and present those same virtual disks.
1. Stop all applications that are using the virtual disks to be deleted.
2. Using the VSM user interface, find each virtual disk that is to be deleted. See the “Working with
virtual disks” chapter of the HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform Manager
user guide.
3. Using the VSM GUI, identify and stop any PiTs, snapshots, snapclones, asynchronous mirrors,
and synchronous mirrors for each of those virtual disks. See the “Working with virtual disks”
chapter of the HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform Manager user guide.
4. Using the appropriate operating system tools, perform a full reformat of the device, with overwrite
as needed, according to your local security policy.
5. For each of the virtual disks to be deleted, use the appropriate OS command to dismount the
disks from the server.
6. Using the VSM GUI, unpresent the virtual disks from the servers. See the “Working with virtual
disks” chapter of the HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform Manager user guide.
7. Using the VSM GUI, delete the virtual disks. See the “Working with virtual disks” chapter of the
HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform Manager user guide.
Once the virtual disks have been deleted using this procedure it is possible to reuse the space in
the existing pool or to delete the pool and any associated stripes sets.
8. Optionally, if desired, and the pool is empty, use the VSM GUI to delete the storage pool. See
the “Working with storage pools” chapter of the HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services
Platform Manager user guide.
9. Optionally, if the stripe sets were used to create the pool, use the VSM GUI to delete the
appropriate stripe sets. See the “Working with stripe sets” chapter of the HP StorageWorks SAN
Virtualization Services Platform Manager user guide.
Deleting PiTs, snapshots, pools, and stripe sets
1. Follow the Deleting or reusing capacity procedure above to first identify all affected virtual disks.
2. Delete the PiTs and snapshots associated with those virtual disks.
3. Delete the pool and any associated stripes sets.
