HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform administrator guide (5697-0204, January 2010)

5. After the virtual disk and volumes are created successfully, the volumes can be discovered as
back-end LUs from VSM GUI as shown below.
6. Create a storage pool using the MSA back-end LUs. Use this pool to create SVSP virtual disks
based on your requirements.
Adding HP XP arrays
To prevent an issue where pools with LUNs of HP XP arrays go into a partial state and some LUNs in
the VSM GUI are marked as failed, create a pool for the HP XP LUNs, but only place one instance
of each LU in the pool. Sometimes the VSM interprets each path to an HP XP LU as a separate LU.
For example, if there are 4 connected XP host ports, and 8 LUNs presented through those 4 ports,
there can be 32 entries on the VSM Back-End LUs panel. When one LU is added to a pool, the
duplicate entries are removed, and the Access Path tab for the HP XP LUs contain the expected paths.
The reason this issue exists is that when a LUN is added to a pool, the VSM writes a signature to it.
If the VSM reads that same signature on other LUs, it knows that LU is actually an additional path,
and the paths are coalesced.
Adding non-HP branded arrays
The general process is:
1. Create a LUN using the array's management software with properties similar to those of an EVA
LUN, for example, failover with autofailback.
2. Present the LUN to at least one and not more than two quads per DPM and both VSM servers of
the SVSP domain, consistent with the array-to-DPM zoning.
Adding new back-end logical units from non-HP arrays
After presenting or removing any back-end LUs to the VSMs/DPMs, a rescan should be with Device
Manager on both VSMs, and the DPM CLI rescan command run on both DPMs.
1. If not already defined in the array manager (for example, HP Command View EVA), create or
define each pair of DPM quads within the DPM group as servers or hosts.
2. If not already defined in the array manager (for example, HP Command View EVA), create or
define the VSM servers as servers.
