Discovering NAS Devices, Tape Libraries, Switches and Storage Systems58
Selective Discovery Filter
The Selective Discovery Filter provides the capability to selectively filter the devices that are passed
from HP SIM to HP SE for discovery operations. The filter is a file created by the user that contains a
list of the IP addresses that should (or should not) be passed to HP SE.
The filter does not impact the device discovery operations within HP SIM. It only restricts the data
that is sent from HP SIM to HP SE. Further, the Selective Discovery Filter does not prevent the
discovery of devices from HP SE. If you decide to discover a filtered device via HP SE discovery, the
use of the Selective Discovery Filter wont impact the ability of HP SE to discover the device.
The Selective Discovery Filter functions on the HP SIM side of the integrated product. It examines
each device that has been discovered by HP SIM prior to sending the discovery information to HP
SE. In the case of multi-homed devices, the filter operation will utilize all reported IP addresses for a
given device in deciding whether or not to send the data to HP SE. IP ranges and wildcards are not
supported.
Devices can be filtered with an inclusive filter or an exclusive filter. The inclusive filter indicates that
only those IP addresses that are defined in the file should be transferred from HP SIM to HP SE. The
exclusive filter indicates that only those IP addresses that are not defined in the file should be
transferred. The filter can only be inclusive or exclusive at any one time. Inclusive and exclusive filters
can not be combined. A blank filter file is treated as though no filter exists.
To selectively filter the devices that are passed from HP SIM to HP SE for discovery operations:
1. Create a file named SEDiscoveryFilterList (with no extension given for the file).
2. Put the SEDiscoveryFilterList file in the [Installation_Directory]\config directory on the HP SIM
management server.
3. To create an inclusive filter, add one IP address on each line of the file, including all IP addresses
that should be passed to HP SE. For example:
15.3.10.120
15.3.10.121
15.3.10.145
15.5.23.12
4. To create an exclusive filter, enter the word “exclusive” on the first line of the file. Next, add one
IP address on each line of the file, including all IP addresses that should NOT be passed to HP
SE. For example:
exclusive
15.3.10.120
15.3.10.121
15.3.10.145
15.5.23.12
Discovery Steps
Discovery of switches, storage systems, NAS devices and tape libraries consists of several steps. The
steps differ according to whether you are using Discovery from HP SIM or Discovery from HP SE.
