HP Storage Essentials V5.00.01 user guide (T4283-96012, January 2006)

Discovering Filers, Tape Libraries, Switches and Storage Systems20
NOTE: Before performing any provisioning operations that involve a brocade switch you must
perform Discovery Step 3 for any subset of elements that includes this brocade switch.
To make the management server aware of elements on your network follow the steps for discovery
outlined in one of the following tables:
Discovery from HP SIM - See Table 4 on page 20.
Discovery from HP SE - See Table 5 on page 21.
NOTE: See ”Accessing the Discovery Pages for HP SIM and HP SE” on page 17 for details on
how to access HP SIM or HP SE.
Table 4 HP SIM Discovery Steps for Switches, NAS filers, and Storage Systems
Step Description
1 If you have several switches and storage systems that use the same password
and user name, set that password and user name as the default. Use the
Global Settings (Options > Protocol Settings > Global Settings) feature
to set your default passwords. Refer to the documentation that ships with SIM
for more information.
2 Discover your switches (Options > Discovery > Automatic). See Table 6 on
page 31 for information on how to discover the types of switches in your
network.
One way to detect multiple IP addresses at once is to add an IP range for
scanning. The management server scans the IP range for elements and
populates the discovery list with element it could contact.
You can then discover those elements. See ”Adding an IP Range for
Scanning” on page 23 for more information.
3 Discover your filers and storage systems (Options > Discovery >
Automatic). See Table 9 on page 54.
4 Discovery Data Collection (Options > Storage Essentials > Discovery >
Run Discovery Data Collection) is required to obtain information from your
discovered elements. Discovery Data Collection takes some time. You might
want to perform this process when the network and the managed elements
are not busy.
