Virtual machine protection
Select one of the following virtual machine protection scenarios:
● Protect an ESX virtual machine using Storage Mirroring Recover for Virtual
Infrastructure
● Protect a server to a virtual target machine on VMware ESX using Storage
Mirroring Recover Virtual Recovery Assistant for ESX
● Protect a physical or virtual machine with Hyper-V using Storage Mirroring
Recover Virtual Recovery Assistant for Hyper-V
● Protect a Hyper-V virtual machine using Storage Mirroring Recover for Hyper-V
After you have configured protection, you will monitor the protection.
Protect a virtual machine on an ESX server
Storage Mirroring Recover for Virtual Infrastructure is used to protect entire virtual
machines on the VMware ESX Server platform by actively replicating virtual machine
files between datastores.
1. Before you set up protection for your source, verify that the required ports are
enabled.
2. Configure your VMware ESX servers to allow either root or non-root login.

You must properly configure your ESX servers before you can use
Storage Mirroring Recover for Virtual Infrastructure
3. Launch the Storage Mirroring Recover for Virtual Infrastructure console.
4. Connect to the Storage Mirroring Recover for Virtual Infrastructure server.
5. Set up protection for the virtual machine.
Port configuration
By default, Storage Mirroring Recover for Virtual Infrastructure makes use of the
following ports.
● Port 6331—Used by the Storage Mirroring Recover for Virtual Infrastructure
console to connect to the SMRVI service. This port may be modified.
● Port 443—Used by the Storage Mirroring Recover for Virtual Infrastructure service
to connect to VMware VirtualCenter and to the VMware ESX Host(s) via HTTPS.
This port cannot be changed.
