HP StorageWorks Storage Mirroring user's guide (T2558-96073, February 2008)

Recovering an entire server
If the source has failed, you can recover it to another server. You will need another similar server, but it does not need to
have Storage Mirroring installed on it.
Keep in mind the following points when recovering system state and data.
The Storage Mirroring Recovery Manager triggers certain processes during a recovery. Therefore, you need to have the
Recovery Manager open for the triggers to execute. You can close the Recovery Manager while a mirror is executing
between the target image server and the recovery server or while the system state is being applied on the recovery
server, but it must be open after both of those processes (mirroring and system state application) are complete to trigger
the next process.
Once the recovery process has been initiated, the recovery server may not be usable or bootable during the recovery
process because only portions of the system state have been applied. Once the recovery process has completed and the
recovery server has been rebooted, the recovery server will be functional as the original source.
If Storage Mirroring is installed on a non-system volume on both the target image server and the recovery server,
recovery will be prohibited. In this case, uninstall Storage Mirroring from the recovery server and the recovery process
will install it automatically on the system volume.
If you will be recovering across a firewall, you will need to open various ports for Server Recovery Option
communications between the target image server and the recovery server.
Ports 135-139—These ports must be opened for Microsoft file share TCP and UDP communications.
Port 445—This port must be opened for Microsoft directory services TCP and UDP communications.
Port 1100—This port must be opened for Server Recovery Option TCP and UDP communications.
Port 1105—This port must be opened for Server Recovery Option UDP communications.
Port 1106—This port must be opend for Server Recoery Option TCP communications.
1. The Recovery Manager can be started from within the Management Console or from the Windows desktop.
From the Management Console, select Tools, Recovery Manager.
From the Windows desktop, select Start, Programs, Storage Mirroring, Recovery Manager.
2. Select the Image Server, which is the target that contains the image from your source server. After you have selected
the target image server, the list of available images will automatically be populated.
3. From the Available Images, select the image that corresponds with the source server. If the image you want is not listed,
click
Add and specify the name and location of the image. After you have selected an image, the properties of that image
will be displayed in the Properties tab at the bottom of the window.
4. Instead of using the most recent image of the source, you can use a previous image, taken by a Storage Mirroring
snapshot of the target. The source image will correspond to the time the target snapshot was taken. If desired, select the
snapshot that you want to use from
Available Snapshots.
5. Specify the Recovery Server, which is the replacement server that will replace the original source.
NOTE: You must supply a user name and password that is a member of the Storage Mirroring Admin security
group.
