SQL Server 2005 setup program can fail
During its initialization phase, the SQL Server 2005 setup program uses a hidden administrative
share as the location for a tempfolder. If the setup program attempts to place the tempfolder on a
PSFS volume where the hidden administrative share is not yet created by LAN Manager, the setup
will fail.
Workaround. Use the following command to create an administrative share on the PSFS volume.
In the command, s:\ is the PSFS volume.
net share s$=s:\ /grant:builtin\administrators,full

Duplicate IP addresses can be created when installing SQL Server 2005 SP1 or SP2
Under some circumstances, installing SQL Server 20005 SP1 or SP2 can introduce duplicate IP
addresses, making the instance unable to start up. This is a known issue in SQL installer (SQL BU
Defect Tracking numbers 543869 and 552807).
Workaround. Edit the registry and manually remove the duplicate entry for the instance.

SQL Server installer may incorrectly report successful installation of hotfix/Service Pack
If you attempt to install a 64-bit SQL 2005 hotfix/service pack on a 32-bit SQL instance and the
node includes both 32-bit and 64-bit instances, the installer will fail silently and continue to update
all 64-bit common components. The hotfix process will return a success status even though the
32-bit database engine is not updated.
When installing hotfixes or service packs, be sure that the hotfix is for the same operating system
version as the instance that you are upgrading.

SQL Server installer may report a failure when installing SQL Server 2005 SP1
If a SQL Server 2005 instance was not installed with all components, the SQL Server installer will
report an error such as Did not detect string ‘Installation Complete’ when you
install Service Pack 1. This message can be ignored. The service pack was applied correctly and
the instance will show the new version number.
