EPLOYMENTS
PFS Terms The following terms are used to describe processes and devices in PFS.
PFS Operating
Modes
Each individual file share on the HP EFS WAN Accelerator is configured in one of the
following operating modes:
Broadcast Mode. The share originates on the origin server and a read-only copy
is available as a share on the branch-office HP EFS WAN Accelerator. The data is
updated periodically on the HP EFS WAN Accelerator with the data from the
origin server. You specify when and how frequently updates (that is,
synchronization) are to occur when you configure a share.
Proxy File Service
Term
Description
Proxy File Server A virtual file server resident on the HP EFS WAN Accelerator,
providing Windows file access (with ACLs) capability at a
branch office on the LAN network, populated over an optimized
WAN connection with data from the origin server.
Origin File Server The server located in the data center which hosts the origin data
volumes.
IMPORTANT: The PFS share and the origin-server share name
cannot contain Unicode characters. The Management Console
does not support Unicode characters.
Domain Mode In Domain mode you join the Windows domain for which the
HP EFS WAN Accelerator will be a member. Typically, this is
the same domain as your company’s domain.
Domain Controller (DC) Specifies the domain controller name, the host that provides
user login service in the domain. (Typically, with Windows 2000
Active Directory Service domains, given a domain name, the
system automatically retrieves the domain controller name.)
Local Workgroup Mode In Local Workgroup mode you define a workgroup and add
individual users that will have access to the PFS shares on the
HP EFS WAN Accelerator.
Share The data volume exported from the origin server to the remote
HP EFS WAN Accelerator.
IMPORTANT: The PFS share and the origin-server share name
cannot contain Unicode characters. The Management Console
does not support Unicode characters.
Local Name The name that you assign to a share on the HP EFS WAN
Accelerator. This is the name by which users identify and map a
share.
Remote Path The path to the data on the origin server or the Universal
Naming Convention (UNC) path of a share to which you want
to make available to PFS.
Share Synchronization Synchronization runs periodically in the background, ensuring
that the data on the proxy file server is synchronized with the
origin server. You have the HP EFS WAN Accelerator refresh
the data automatically by setting the interval, in minutes; or
manually at anytime.
