HP StorageWorks Enterprise File Services WAN Accelerator Deployment Guide (November 2005)

82 8 - PROXY FILE SERVICE DEPLOYMENTS
Continuous access to files in the event of WAN disruption. In the event
of a network disruption that prevents access over the WAN to the origin
server, files can still be accessed on the local HP EFS WAN Accelerator.
PFS requires an HP EFS WAN Accelerator DL320-1010, DL320-2010,
DL380-3010, or DL380-5010. These models have extra disk capacity that is
utilized when PFS is enabled.
NOTE: Using PFS can reduce the overall connection capacity for optimized TCP
connections, as memory and CPU resources are diverted to support the PFS operation.
PFS also requires the HP EFS Remote Copy Utility (HP EFS RCU) 2.0 or later.
The HP EFS RCU must be installed on the origin server or on a separate
Windows host with file share access to the data utilized by PFS. For detailed
information, see the HP EFS Remote Copy Utility Reference Manual.
PFS Terms
The following terms are used to describe processes and devices in PFS.
PFS Term Description
Proxy-File Server An HP EFS WAN Accelerator providing Windows file
access capability at a branch office on the LAN network,
populated with data from the origin server over an
optimized WAN connection.
Origin Server The server located in the data center which hosts the
origin data volumes.
Domain Name The domain to which you want to make the proxy-file
server a member server. Typically, this is the same
domain as your company’s domain.
IMPORTANT: The HP EFS WAN Accelerator host name
must be in the DNS database before it can join the domain.
Host names with greater than 15 characters prevent the
HP EFS WAN Accelerator from joining the domain. Make
sure your HP EFS WAN Accelerator host name is less
than 15 characters for PFS configurations.
Domain Controller
Specifies the domain controller (which is the host that
provides user login service in the domain). Typically, with
Windows 2000 Active Directory Service domains, the
system automatically retrieves the domain controller
name. The domain controller is optional. You must
specify the domain controller only if it is located across
the WAN.
