HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software v5.2 Install Guide (T1789-96317, May 2011)

After you complete the prerequisites, perform the P9000 Performance Advisor management station
prerequisites. For more information, see Management station prerequisites on page 24.
Designing the infrastructure
This complete section needs to be reviewed for the new array, P9000.
The following procedure helps you to estimate the number of management stations, hosts, XP and the
P9000 disk arrays that are required:
1. Collecting information about the XP and the P9000 disk arrays that you will monitor on page 20
2. Determining the management station and host requirements on page 20
3. Preparing the XP or the P9000 disk arrays and determining their data collection
schedules on page 22
Collecting information about the XP and the P9000 disk arrays that you will monitor
1. Determine the number of logical devices (LDEVs) for each XP and P9000 disk arrays.
2. Determine how frequently you want to access data from the XP and the P9000 disk arrays.
IMPORTANT:
The rate of data collection can affect the loads seen by the XP and the P9000 disk arrays,
and the management station.
P9000 Performance Advisor provides the following types of data collection:
Configuration data collection:
The frequency of configuration data collection depends on how often you change the configuration
of an XP or a P9000 disk array. For example, if you add a LUN to an XP or a P9000 disk array
every week, you might collect configuration data at least once a week to see the changes reflected
in your P9000 Performance Advisor database.
Performance data collection:
For troubleshooting the XP or the P9000 disk array performance issues, HP recommends a
collection frequency of 1 to 3 minutes.
IMPORTANT:
Frequent collection increases the load on the XP and the P9000 disk arrays and also the
management station. For real-time troubleshooting, HP recommends using P9000Watch, which
is one of the utilities included in P9000 Performance Advisor to collect real-time performance
data for troubleshooting purpose.
For general monitoring and forecasting resource utilization, HP recommends a collection fre-
quency of 5 - 30 minutes.
