HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software v5.2 Install Guide (T1789-96317, May 2011)

Mapping command devices from VMware ESX virtual server
The command devices that are visible to the VMware ESX must be made available to the virtual or
guest operating platforms residing on these virtual servers. This is one of the prerequisites for installing
host agents on the VMware ESX virtual server.
1. In the VMware Infrastructure Client screen, right-click the guest operating platform where you
want to map the command devices.
2. Select Edit Setting from the pop menu.
The Virtual m/c Properties dialog box appears.
3. Select Hard Disk from the list and click Add.
The Add Wizard appears, and guides you through the process of adding hard disks or command
devices.
4. Select Hard Disk as the device type and click Next>.
5. Select Raw Device Mappings and click Next>.
6. Select the LUN that you want to use and click Next>.
7. Retain the default selections on the subsequent screens.
The Ready to Complete dialog box displays your current selection.
8. Click Finish. If you want to modify the current selection, click Back.
The new hard disk is added to the Hardware list. You can proceed with the host agent installation.
You can start requesting host updates and performing configuration and performance data collection.
Verifying host agent connectivity to a command device
Before you begin the host agent installation, you must create and assign command devices, so that
the connectivity is established between the XP or the P9000 disk arrays and your host agent. If a
command device is not created and presented to the host, the RAID Manager Library version is not
displayed when you request an host agent update from P9000 Performance Advisor.
Use P9000Info to verify if a command device is presented to your P9000 Performance Advisor host
agent.
IMPORTANT:
P9000Info is available in the Tools folder on the P9000 Performance Advisor Installation disk
2, and must be executed separately.
HP does not recommend connecting a command device through multiple paths.
The following commands can be used before and after installing the Windows and UNIX host agents
to verify if the command devices are connected:
To verify if a command device is presented to a Windows host: In your host's command prompt
window, type xpinfo.exe - i | find “-CM”.
