Collecting information about the XP and the XP7 disk arrays that you will monitor
1. Determine the number of logical devices (LDEVs) for each XP, P9500 and XP7 disk arrays.
2. Determine how frequently you want to access data from the XP, P9000 and the XP7 disk
arrays.
IMPORTANT: The rate of data collection can affect the loads seen by the XP and the XP7
disk arrays, and the management station.
HP XP7 Performance Advisor provides the following types of data collection:
Configuration data collection:
The frequency of configuration data collection depends on how often you change the
configuration of an XP, P9000 or an XP7 disk array. For example, if you add a LUN to an
XP, P9000 or an XP7 disk array every week, you might collect configuration data at least
once a week to see the changes reflected in your HP XP7 Performance Advisor database.
Performance data collection:
For troubleshooting the XP, P9000 or the XP7 disk array performance issues, HP
recommends a collection frequency of 1 to 3 minutes.
IMPORTANT: Frequent collection increases the load on the XP, P9000 and the XP7 disk
arrays and also the management station. For real-time troubleshooting, HP recommends
using HP XPWatch, which is one of the utilities included in HP XP7 Performance Advisor
to collect real-time performance data for troubleshooting purpose.
For general monitoring and forecasting resource utilization, HP recommends a collection
frequency of 5 - 30 minutes.
Determining the management station and host requirements
Follow these steps to determine your management station and host setup requirements:
1. Check the supported configuration for the management station and the host agent. For more
information, see “Verifying the supported configurations for HP XP7 Performance Advisor
(page 26) and “Verifying the supported configurations for HP XP7 Performance Advisor host
agents (page 35).
2. Increase the management station and the host agent configuration based on the number of
LDEVs you require and the collection frequencies you want to set. For more information, see
“Estimating the required configuration (page 22).
Estimating the required configuration
The following items can help you estimate the configuration you will need:
