Glossary
A
allocation policy Storage system rules that govern how virtual disks are created. There are two rules used in creating
virtual disks.
Demand allocated–The space a virtual disk requires on the physical disks is not reserved
until needed.
Fully allocated–The space a virtual disk requires on the physical disks is reserved, even if
the virtual disk is not currently using the space.
array Synonymous with storage array, storage system, and virtual array. A group of disks in one or
more disk enclosures connected to two controllers running controller software that presents disk
storage capacity as one or more virtual disks.
C
client An intelligent device that requests services from other intelligent devices. In the context of EVA
software, a client is a computer used to access the software remotely using a supported browser.
CLUI Command line user interface.
container Virtual disk space that is preallocated for later use as a snapclone, snapshot, or mirrorclone.
controller A hardware/software device that manages communications between host systems and other
devices. Controllers typically differ by the type of interface to the host and provide functions
beyond those the devices support.
D
disk group A named group of disks selected from all available disks in an array. One or more virtual disks
can be created from a disk group.
DR group Data replication group. A logical group of virtual disks in a remote replication relationship with
a corresponding group on another array.
F
failover The process that takes place when one controller assumes the workload of a failed companion
controller. Failover continues until the failed controller is operational.
failsafe A safe state that devices automatically enter after a malfunction. Failsafe DR groups stop accepting
host input and stop logging write history if a group member becomes unavailable.
H
HBA Host bus adapter.
host A computer that runs user applications and uses the information stored on an array.
host volume Storage capacity that is defined and mountable by a host operating system.
J
job A repeatable custom script that automates replication tasks. A job can be simple (for example,
create a DR group) or complex (for example, perform cascaded replication). Jobs can be run
from the GUI, from the command line, from batch files, or by a scheduler.
M
managed set Selected resources grouped together for convenient management. For example, you can create
a managed set to manage all DR groups whose sources reside in the same rack.
mirrorclone Mirrorclone replication establishes and maintains a copy of an original virtual disk via a local
replication link. When first created (and whenever resynchronized by an action or command), a
