HP StorageWorks Storage Mirroring evaluation guide (T2558-96075, February 2008)

5 - 7
Simulating a failure
To fully evaluate the process, you need to simulate a failure. To do this, power off the source server.
Recovering the source
After the source has failed, you can recover it to another server. You will need another similar server, but it does not need
to have Storage Mirroring installed on it.
Keep in mind the following points when recovering system state and data.
The Storage Mirroring Recovery Manager triggers certain processes during a recovery. Therefore, you need to have the
Recovery Manager open for the triggers to execute. You can close the Recovery Manager while a mirror is executing
between the target image server and the recovery server or while the system state is being applied on the recovery
server, but it must be open after both of those processes (mirroring and system state application) are complete to trigger
the next process.
Once the recovery process has been initiated, the recovery server may not be usable or bootable during the recovery
process because only portions of the system state have been applied. Once the recovery process has completed and the
recovery server has been rebooted, the recovery server will be functional as the original source.
1. The Recovery Manager can be started from within the Management Console or from the Windows desktop.
From the Management Console, select Tools, Recovery Manager.
From the Windows desktop, select Start, Programs, Storage Mirroring, Recovery Manager.
2. Select the Image Server, which is the target that contains the image from your source server. After you have selected
the target image server, the list of available images will automatically be populated.
3. From the Available Images, select the image that corresponds with the source server. If the image you want is not listed,
click
Add and specify the name and location of the image. After you have selected an image, the properties of that image
will be displayed in the Properties tab at the bottom of the window.
4. Notice that you can take advantage of Storage Mirroring snapshot capability, although it is not necessary for this
evaluation.
5. Specify the Recovery Server, which is the replacement server that will replace the original source.
6. There are optional recovery settings which are not necessary for this evaluation. Feel free to review the optional
settings, if desired. A complete description of each setting can be found in the User’s Guide.
NOTE: If you do not have another server to recover to, you can simulate another server by renaming the original
source and changing the source IP address(es). This will make the source appear like a new server. The
recovery process will then recover the original source (system state and data) to the new server.
