HP SVA V2.0 System Administration Guide

Tip:
The default supported resolutions are meant as a starting point and you should review and add
to them as needed for your display devices. Changes to these tags require regenerating the SVA
Configuration Files as described in Section 2.4.3.3. The values for these tags determine valid
resolution options for the SVA launch scripts.
If the display device you want to use with your cluster requires an unsupported resolution, you
need to add it to the Site Configuration File. You do this by modifying the value for the appropriate
tag (mono or stereo). See Chapter 1 for information on how to modify the Site Configuration
File.
For example, if you want to use a stereo display device that requires 1600x1400 at 110 Hz, you
would modify the SVA_SUPPORTED_STEREO_RESOLUTIONS as follows:
SVA_SUPPORTED_STEREO_RESOLUTIONS="1280x1024,1920x1200,1600x1200,1400x1050,1280x960,1152x900,1024x768,1024x768_60,800x600,640x480,1600X1400"
Note the addition of the 1600X1400 resolution to the end of the line.
You would also need to edit the Monitor Properties File to make sure the correct modelines are
available for this new resolution and its vertical refresh rate as described in Section 2.4.3.
2.4.3 Work with SVA X Configuration Files for Displays
X Configuration Files are an accepted and common mechanism needed to display images (mono
and stereo) on display devices. The X Configuration Files on SVA nodes must accurately reflect
the various properties of the attached display device, for example, vertical refresh rate, horizontal
sync, and modelines.
IMPORTANT: During the imaging part of the SVA installation, SVA generates its own set of X
Configuration Files in /etc/X11 on all the cluster nodes, with the exception of the head node
and login nodes. These SVA X Configuration Files are the only ones used by SVA on all
visualization nodes, with the exception of the head node or login nodes. You should not make
changes to the standard X Configuration File (xorg.conf) on visualization nodes because it
will not be used by SVA. The SVA X Configuration Files are the xorg* files in /etc/X11 other
than the standard xorg.conf.
The SVA X Configuration Files properties are usually fine for handling typical desktop display
devices, for example mono flat panel displays. However, for more exotic mono displays, and
often for stereo displays, you may need to change some property settings in the SVA X
Configuration Files. If your display device fails to display images properly (for example, a blank
display or an unsupported resolution error), you should review the Monitor Properties Files
located in /hptc_cluster/sva/etc/X11/templates/monitors to verify that they contain
information appropriate for your displays. You should also review Table 2-3 for default supported
resolutions.
Changing settings in the SVA X Configuration Files can be complicated. You need to consult
your display device documentation for specific display specifications. This documentation may
include settings information, for example, modelines, that is needed by the SVA X Configuration
Files on your system.
However, rather than editing the SVA X Configuration Files directly, you should take advantage
of SVA-provided support for system administrators that makes it easier to change display
properties in the SVA X Configuration Files. See Section 2.4.3.1 for details on how to do this.
