Using I/O Slots effectively in the HP ProLiant DL580 G5 server

The HP ProLiant DL580 server, introduced in September 2007, represents best in class performance and scalability in a 4U

rack-optimized form factor. This new DL580 supports 4 Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors and an industry-leading 256 GB of

memory, as well as a maximum of 16 SAS hard drives.

For maximum I/O scalability, the DL580 G5 features a total of eleven slots, including up to seven x8 PCIe slots and four x4

PCIe slots when configured with the PCIe x8 three-slot option card. In order to achieve this, the I/O architecture of the DL580

uses three PCIe switches to multiplex, or fan-out, the three sets of PCIe x8 buses that are available from the Memory

Controller/Hub into the 72 PCIe lanes that are needed to support the eleven I/O expansion slots. Figure 1-1 shows a slightly

simplified block diagram of the I/O subsystem, including the three PCIe switches and the PCIe slots.

ISS Technology Update Volume 6, Number 10 Using this I/O architecture, each of the three x8 PCIe bus/switch combinations supports multiple PCIe slots, resulting in a sharing of the 4 GB/s aggregate bandwidth of each x8 PCIe bus coming from the Memory Controller/Hub among those slots connected to the corresponding PCIe switch. Table 1-1 shows how this maps out for the DL580 G5. Table 1-1.

ISS Technology Update Volume 6, Number 10 Enclosure, network, and profile naming VCEM manages BladeSystem c-Class enclosures and Virtual Connect domains as separate entities. To singularly identify these, each enclosure should have an explicit and unique name. This allows for quick and easy identification through VCEM and other management tools such as HP Systems Insight Manager. VCEM uses the concept of Domain Groups for managing multiple Virtual Connect domains.

For each network uplink, verify that the network name, state, smart link, network port location, speed/duplex mode, and connection mode are identical. Ensure that the number of networks configured in the Virtual Connect Domain is equal. For each tagged VLAN, verify that the network name, VLAN ID, Native, and Smart Link are the same.
