Question #4________________________________________________________________________________________
Q. What factors drive protocol selection, and why?
A. There are no hard and fast rules for selecting one protocol over the other.
The following chart provides selection criteria to help with this decision:
Selection Criteria* RDP v.6 RGS v.5
Need to run graphical applications (Goo
g
le Earth,
Java-based apps, medical imaging, etc.)
Want to deploy Vista operating system on blade
PC
Run multi-media applications (Flash, QuickTime,
webcasts, DVD video, etc.)
Using Smart cards
Need dynamic plug & play for USB devices
PDA synchronization
Need access to files on client device when
connected
Want to use the SAM Web Client
* Only the protocol(s) checked off in this chart will work with these criteria.
Question #5________________________________________________________________________________________
Q. Which connection broker is compatible with RGS?
A. At present, RGS is supported only with HP Session Allocation Manager (HP SAM). HP SAM also supports MS-RDP, so it is
an acceptable connection broker to use across all HP VDI implementations.
Question #6________________________________________________________________________________________
Q. How is HP SAM licensed?
A. An HP SAM license is a 5x5 key that is entered into the SAM web server. This license key determines the length and type of
support and the number of resources (in this case, virtual machines) that can be supported.
The number of licenses is based on the number of resources created and not on the number of users. This means that the
number of users can exceed the number of licenses (oversubscription) with no additional license charge to a customer.
Question #7________________________________________________________________________________________
Q. Is HP SAM a VM deployment and management tool?
A. No. HP SAM is not intended to manage or deploy VMs. There are many compelling products on the market to accomplish
that task, including HP Rapid Deployment Pack and Virtual Machine Management pack. SAM manages the relationships
among end users, policies, and remote resources to simplify the administrative load within the RCS environment.
