propose consolidation or rebalancing scenarios. The data from Capacity Advisor can be used to help detect systems that are
either over- or under-utilized. The Capacity Advisor also provides a forecasting mechanism based on data extrapolation— for
instance, to project the growth in a server’s power requirements over time.
Controls physical and virtual resources in the same way by using a common interface that extends HP Systems Insight
Manager and Insight Control functionality. Users can seamlessly drill down into physical and virtual resources, and execute
management tasks without having to log into a new tool or re-establish context.
Built on rock-solid software
The Insight Dynamics – VSE software suite builds on the HP VSE. HP VSE is a robust and mature software tool that has been
managing HP Integrity physical and virtual systems, including HP Superdomes, for many years. VSE allows administrators to
optimize partition capacity (hardware and software-based), as well as standalone servers and server blades, all from a single
management console. Insight Dynamics – VSE expands on these capabilities by adding support for ProLiant and BladeSystem c-
Class servers, adding new logical server management for ProLiant servers, expanding the capacity planning capabilities, and
adding enhanced integration across the HP portfolio.
Leverages existing HP ProLiant software
As shown in Figure 1-1, HP Insight Dynamics – VSE builds upon the capabilities of other HP software and ProLiant technology,
including:
HP Insight Power Manager – HP Insight Power Manager (IPM) is an integrated power monitoring and management
application that provides centralized control of server power consumption and thermal output, enabling power optimization
through Capacity Advisor (CapAd).
Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) processors – iLO processors incorporate multiple hardware, firmware, and communication
interfaces that provide comprehensive information about the server hardware.
HP Virtual Connect technology – HP Virtual Connect technology virtualizes I/O connectivity by masking the physical network
connections to the server. It puts a virtualization layer between the servers and the local area network (LAN) or storage area
network (SAN) so that the external networks connect to a pool of servers rather than to individual servers.
HP Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager (VCEM) – HP VCEM allows administrators to seamlessly manage multiple c-Class
server blade enclosures using a single console application.
HP Virtual Machine Management Pack (VMMP) – HP VMMP provides central management and control of VMware,
Microsoft, and Citrix virtual machines. VMMP integrates with virtualization vendor management tools, such as VMware
VirtualCenter, and VMMP is the only solution available that can initiate VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) to
relocate VMs based on hardware predictive failure alerts, out of the box.
HP Server Migration Pack – Universal Edition (SMP-Universal) – HP SMP – Universal can be used to migrate an operating
system, applications, and data from one logical server to another.
