White paper | HP Systems Insight Manager 7.x Abstract HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM) is a flexible management utility for an enterprise environment employing HP ProLiant, HP BladeSystem Integrated Manager in HP Insight Control, HP StorageWorks, and HP Integrity solutions. The system database and configuration files used by HP SIM should be backed up regularly to allow recovery from a catastrophic system failure or corrupted files.
White paper | HP Systems Insight Manager 7.x Introduction HP SIM is the foundation for the HP unified infrastructure management strategy. HP SIM provides hardware-level management for HP ProLiant, HP Integrity, and HP 9000 servers, HP BladeSystems, and HP StorageWorks MSA/EVA/XP storage arrays—all from a single console in the data center or in a remote location. Server and storage information for a network is kept in a database compiled by HP SIM.

White paper | HP Systems Insight Manager 7.x To save the HP SIM configuration and database by using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio: 1. Use a file management tool to save the directories and files listed in Table 1. Substitute with the pathname of the location where SIM is installed (for example, C:\Program Files\HP\Systems Insight Manager). You must use a file management tool that preserves file permissions (such as the Windows Backup tool) while saving directories and files. Table 1.
White paper | HP Systems Insight Manager 7.x 2. Install SQL Server client components. To download the client components, go to http://www.microsoft.com/enus/download/details.aspx?id=7593. a. Save any user-supplied (custom) files in the SIM directory tree, such as tool definition files (TDEFs), Management Information Base files (MIBs), login prompt, and actions. b. Save the OpenSSH keys from the following folder: \etc c.
White paper | HP Systems Insight Manager 7.x In this example, the name of the database is SIMDB1; the backup database would be named SIMDB1.bak. Figure 2: Backing up the database Restoring HP SIM configuration files and SQL Server 2008 R2 data files from a backup 1. Uninstall HP SIM. This uninstalls HP SIM, but retains SIMDB1, as shown in Figure 3. Figure 3: SIMDB1 database 2. Reinstall SIM. This creates a blank database with a new name (SIMDB2 in this example). See Figure 4.
White paper | HP Systems Insight Manager 7.x Figure 4: SIMDB2 database For information about restoring HP SIM, see the HP Systems Insight Manager 7.2 Installation and Configuration Guide for Microsoft Windows Systems, available at http://www.hp.com/go/insightmanagement/sim/docs. If you are not performing a reinstallation of HP SIM, proceed to step 6. Note: You must reinstall SIM using the same user account. If a local account was used, the host name must remain the same.
White paper | HP Systems Insight Manager 7.x 7. Use a file management tool to restore the directories and files listed in Table 1. Substitute with the pathname of the location where HP SIM is installed. If available, ensure that the Always replace the file on disk option is selected. You must use a file management tool that preserves file permissions (such as the Windows Backup tool) while restoring directories and files. 8. Run mxgetdbinfo on the HP SIM system.
White paper | HP Systems Insight Manager 7.x Figure 7: Restoring the database 14. In the Restore window, select Options. 15. In the right pane, under Restore options, select the Overwrite the existing database check box, as shown in Figure 8. 16. Under Restore the database files as, change the names of the mdf and ldf files in the Data and Log Files option to match the complete pathnames to SIMDB2. Because you selected the SIMDB1.
White paper | HP Systems Insight Manager 7.x The operation should complete successfully, as shown in Figure 9. Figure 9: Restoring the database 18. Open the command window and enter the command mxconfigrepo –c to check for database errors. Enter the command mxconfigrepo –f to correct any errors. 19. Enter the mxconfigrepo –c command again as a final check. 20. Start the HP SIM service and any plug-in applications. 21. Verify that the data is restored successfully.
White paper | HP Systems Insight Manager 7.x commands and SOAP calls that modify the state of HP SIM cannot be executed when the mxquiesce command is executed. In order to perform a clean backup of HP SIM, no tasks should be running when the HP SIM services are stopped. The mxunquiesce command returns the system to the original state, enabling the user to create, modify, and delete tasks, as well as execute CLI commands and SOAP calls. The mxquiesce and mxunquiesce commands are located in \bin.
White paper | HP Systems Insight Manager 7.x 8. Enter the following command: set ORACLE_SID= 9. To avoid the problem of empty tables not being exported, identify the empty tables by entering the following commands in sqlplus: Sqlplus / where is the user name used by HP SIM to connect to the HP SIM database, and is the password for this user, as shown below. Figure 10: Identifying empty tables 10.
White paper | HP Systems Insight Manager 7.x In the query, enter the database user name in uppercase letters. For example, if the database user name is 'test2', enter 'TEST2' in the query because that is how it is stored in the database.
White paper | HP Systems Insight Manager 7.x 14. The script output is spooled to the fix_empty_tables.sql file in the directory from which you executed sqlplus. If you want the file to be spooled to a different location, in the spool statement, specify that location (for example, C:\temp. In this case, the statement would be as follows: spool ‘C:\temp\fix_empty_tables.sql’ Figure13: Script for including all empty tables 15.
White paper | HP Systems Insight Manager 7.x Backing up the HP SIM database 1. Log on to the Oracle Management Server. At the Oracle server console command line, enter the following: set ORACLE_SID= where is the name of the database to be saved. Figure 15: Setting the Oracle database name 2. Enter the exp command, and then press Enter to accept the database backup. Table 2 lists the Oracle database parameters and the recommended actions. Table 2.

After you select the default parameters, the database backup is initialized, and a backup.dmp file is created at the specified location. Figure 17: Creating the database backup.dmp file Restoring data files for use with Oracle If necessary, reinstall HP SIM as described in the HP Systems Insight Manager 7.2 Installation and Configuration Guide for Microsoft Windows Systems, available at http://www.hp.
White paper | HP Systems Insight Manager 7.x Note: The HP SIM installation procedure includes loading the VCRM on a Windows CMS. 4. Reinstall any plug-in utilities (and associated files and databases) used with HP SIM. 5. If it is running, stop the HP SIM service, along with any HP SIM plug-in applications, such as performance management. 6. Reinstall Oracle as instructed in the Oracle documentation. For more information, see http://www.oracle.com/pls/db112/portal.portal_db?selected=11&frame=. 7.
