Setting up managed storage systems
Storage Management Initi
ative Specification
(SMI
-
S) is a Storage Networking Industry Association
(SNIA) standard that enables interoperable management for storage networks and storage devices.
Systems Insight Manager
uses this standard to discover and manage the
storage systems
i
t supports.
You must have a storage system WBEM
SMI
-
S provider
installed and configured on a managed node
for
Systems Insight Manager
to discover SAN storage. This includes storage devices such as Fibre
Channel disk arrays, switches, tape libraries, or ho
sts (with Fibre Channel host bus adapters.)
See the
Systems Insight Manager
SMI
-
S Provider webpage,
http://www.hp.com/go/hpsim/providers
, to view the latest information regarding
Systems Insi
ght
Manager
support for a particular device. This webpage offers information on obtaining, installing,
and configuring SMI
-
S providers.
Installing SMI
-
S providers
Each storage vendor provides the
SMI
-
S provider
and installation instructions for its stora
ge system.
The webpage referenced in the previous section provides information on obtaining SMI
-
S providers.
Also, consult the storage vendor website or representative for more information regarding their SMI
-
S
providers. For each storage system:
1.
Verify t
hat the applicable SMI
-
S provider is installed.
2.
If the SMI
-
S provider is not installed, obtain and install it per the vendor installation instructions.
Verifying SSL
Systems Insight Manager
requires that
Secure Sockets Layer
(SSL) is enabled for the SMI
-
S
provider in
order to discover and manage the storage system that the provider supports. Verify that
SSL
is
enabled for each SMI
-
S provider.
Configuring SMI
-
S providers
You might have
to modify an SMI
-
S provider port number or password. Use the provider
documentation to perform these modifications.
For example, if two CIMOMs exist on the same host, you must configure them to use different ports to
communicate with the CMS.
Configuring
Systems Insight Manager
to discover storage systems
After verifying
that each storage system SMI
-
S provider is installed and configured, configure
Systems
Insight Manager
to discover the storage systems by performing the following steps:
1.
Enter the user name and password for each provider SMI CIMOM in the Default WBEM set
tings
section on the Setting Global Protocols page.
3.
Add each SMI CIMOM IP address to the
System Automatic Discovery
task or to the
Creating a
New Discovery
task.

Systems Insight Manager
discovers the storage systems after the next automatic discovery task. If you
want to discover your storage systems immediately, run the discovery task as describ
ed in the
“Running a Discovery Task” section of the
Systems Insight Manager
User Guide
at

mail notifications for proactive notification of potential
problems.
