Step 2: After discovery, look for devices that are classified as ”Unmanaged” in the All Systems list and use
“Configure or Repair Agents” to correct communications problems.
To HP SIM, “Unmanaged” means that it cannot successfully communicate using any of its known communication protocols.
That usually is due to some form of credential problem or trust. “Configure or Repair Agents” can utilize operating system
credentials to set SNMP community strings, establish trust by certificate, and so forth.
Step 3: After solving the problem with systems that are reporting themselves ”Unmanaged,” look for systems that
are saying they are ”Unknown” especially if you know them to be ProLiant servers.
When HP SIM reports a system as ”Unknown,” it means that it has established communication using a management protocol,
but there is no information that HP SIM has accessed from the device that allows HP SIM to classify it. In the case of ProLiant
servers, the most likely cause is lack of the ProLiant Support Pack and the System Management Homepage. The HP SIM feature
called ”Initial ProLiant Support Pack Installation” can be used with operating system credentials to install the PSP without any
pre-existing trust relationship between HP SIM and the device.
Summary
Using these three simple steps, you should be able to get most HP SIM implementations on Windows operational and
communicating with all of the nodes in less than two hours.
