Converting HP BladeSystem c7000 Enclosures between 3-phase and single-

phase power

HP BladeSystem c7000 Enclosures are available as three different models, each of which is designed to work with a specific

power infrastructure, either single-phase or 3-phase based. Installed enclosures can, however, be successfully converted from

one power infrastructure to another by:

• Replacing the Input Power Module, and

• Reconfiguring the enclosure’s incoming power distribution.

Successfully converting an enclosure entails three basic steps:

• Ensuring the correctness of the new power infrastructure prior to conversion

• Replacing the existing Input Power Module with one appropriate to the new power infrastructure

• Updating the enclosure’s Onboard Administrator to comply with the new Input Power Module

Ensuring Power Infrastructure

Before beginning a conversion, it is important to first make sure that the correct receptacle(s) and/or PDU infrastructure is

ISS Technology Update Volume 6, Number 8 Additionally, when converting an enclosure to 3-phase operation it is important to remember that 3-phase enclosures require that all six power supplies be installed in order to operate properly. If needed, extra power supplies can be ordered using part number 412138-B21. Replacing the Input Power Module In order to convert an enclosure, its Input Power Module must be exchanged for a module designed to work with the new power infrastructure.

That depends on the protocol used between the end user and VM. Microsoft’s remote desktop protocol (MS RDP) is currently the de facto standard. It does present limitations on graphics-intensive applications, including streaming media. Virtual Network Computing (VNC) is prone to similar limitations.

ISS Technology Update Volume 6, Number 8 The Onboard Administrator ensures that fans and server/storage blades are correctly placed before allowing systems to power on. The base c3000 enclosures ship with four fans installed, which supports up to four half-height devices or two full-height server blades. By installing all six fans, the enclosure can be fully populated with eight half-height devices or four full-height server blades.

View of a fan summary from the Onboard Administrator Based on immediate need, Onboard Administrator pinpoints cooling needs within a c3000 enclosure and automatically adjusts fan speed as needed, thereby minimizing power consumption and maximizing cooling efficiency.

ISS Technology Update Volume 6, Number 8 If you make System Management Homepage configuration changes from the Management Agents Configuration screen, click Restart Agents for changes to the HP Insight Management Agents (Server Agents, Foundation Agents, Storage Agents, and NIC Agents) settings to take effect on the server. IMPORTANT Wait until you have completed changing all of the settings before clicking Restart Agents. You cannot refresh the page or make other changes while the restart is occurring.

ISS Technology Update Volume 6, Number 8 Another way to define custom fields is to configure the generic SNMP System Location and System Contact fields: • In Windows by right-mouse clicking on the SNMP Service (Windows) and clicking on properties, or • In Linux by editing the SNMPD.conf file. The System Location and System Contact fields are part of the standard SNMP; therefore, these custom fields can be used on non-ProLiant servers as long as SNMP is enabled on the server.

ISS Technology Update Volume 6, Number 8 Step 2: After discovery, look for devices that are classified as ”Unmanaged” in the All Systems list and use “Configure or Repair Agents” to correct communications problems. To HP SIM, “Unmanaged” means that it cannot successfully communicate using any of its known communication protocols. That usually is due to some form of credential problem or trust.
