Route Optimization
Route Optimization improves data transmission rates between the Correspondent Node
and Mobile Node. Normally, packets from the Correspondent Node to the Mobile Node
are sent to the Home Agent (and through the Mobile Node’s home network).
When Route Optimization is used, the Home Agent sends an authenticated message to
the Correspondent Node with the Mobile Nodes current Care-of Address. This message
enables the Correspondent Node to send packets directly to the Mobile Node’s Care-of
Address (the Foreign Agent Care-of Address, or directly to the Mobile Node’s Co-located
Care-of Address). The Correspondent Node forms a route optimization tunnel—a tunnel
to the Mobile Node’s Care-of Address.
The data path for packets from a Correspondent Node to a Mobile Node without Route
Optimization is shown in Figure 1-8. The data path for packets from a Correspondent
Node to a Mobile Node with Route Optimization is shown in Figure 1-9.
