HP-UX 11i v3 Installation and Update Guide, September 2009 (Update 5 Release)

Installing HP-UX applications
Your HP-UX 11i v3 media kit contains the HP-UX Application Software DVD. The
Application Software DVD provides a wide variety of HP-UX software products from
which you can choose. You can install them new or use them to update the existing
software on your system. Products for HP-UX 11i v1, HP-UX 11i v2, and HP-UX 11i
v3 are included, although some may require a key. See your HP Customer
Representative for information.
You can install HP-UX 11i v3 applications from the HP-UX Application Software DVD
if you already have an HP-UX 11i v3 OE on your system. (HP-UX 11i v2 applications
require an HP-UX 11i v2 OE, and HP-UX 11i v1 applications require an HP-UX 11i v1
OE.) You do not have to install or update to the new OE that came in your media kit.
However, if you choose to install or update to the new OE, be sure you have completed
the process before you install applications from the HP-UX Application Software DVD.
CAUTION: For the majority of products included on the HP-UX Application Software
DVD, all dependencies are provided on the same DVD. There may be exceptions,
however. Consult the product's documentation for information about any additional
installation requirements.
Tips for installing or updating HP applications
Here are some tips for installing or updating HP applications:
The HP-UX Application Software DVD has an ASCII file called
DVD_TABLE_OF_CONTENTS that lists all software products delivered with the
DVD. You can view this ASCII file with vi, emacs, or any other text editor.
You can also find the complete list of applications included in the HP-UX 11i v3
release on the HP Software Releases & Media site:
http://www.hp.com/softwarereleases/releases-media2/index.html (Navigate to
Current HP-UX update releases or Prior HP-UX update releases, then navigate
to HP-UX New/Updated product list for the appropriate release date.)
To minimize the number of required reboots for installation of applications and
patches, you can create a network depot, copy all the products and patches into
it, and use the same swinstall session. For information, see “Creating a network
depot (optional)” (page 35).
For HP applications, documentation exists that explains how to install and use an
application. The documents may include release notes, readme files, CD and DVD
booklets, white papers, and guides. Refer to the Instant Information DVD or search
for the product at http://docs.hp.com or http://hp.com/go/bizsupport.
