SCSI Persistent Reservation Utilities Release Notes, May 2012

Overview of sg3_utils
This document provides an overview of sg3_utils which is an open source utility package that
has been ported to work with the HP-UX operating system. This software is distributed under the
GPL version 2. There is NO warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A
PARTICULAR PURPOSE. See the licensing information provided with the package.
The sg3_utils package contains utilities that send SCSI commands to devices by using a SCSI
command set. Apart from SCSI parallel interface (SPI) devices, the SCSI command set is used by
ATAPI devices (CD/DVDs and tapes), USB mass storage devices, Fiber Channel disks, IEEE 1394
storage devices (that use the Serial Bus Protocol (SBP)), SAS, iSCSI and FCoE devices (amongst
others). The common set of commands is referred to as the SCSI Primary Commands (SPC) with
SPC-3 being the most recent standard. More information regarding sg3_utils can be found at:
http://sg.danny.cz/sg/sg3_utils.html.
