HP Instant Capacity Version 10.x User Guide (762794-001, March 2014)

contains enough unassigned cores and the virtual partition allows enough additional cores to fulfill
the request. Otherwise, use the parmodify command to reconfigure the nPartitions, or use the
vparmodify command to remove cores from other virtual partitions within the same nPartition
(essentially adding to the unassigned pool).
Using iCAP memory
The iCAP memory is available in units of 16 GB and 32 GB for Intel Itanium 9300 processors and
32 GB and 64 GB for Intel Itanium 9500 processors. The RTU is available in units of 4 GB for
Intel Itanium 9300 processors and 4GB and 64GB for Intel Itanium 9500 processors. During the
time of activation, you must purchase enough iCAP RTUs to activate all the memory on the cell
blade. After the purchase, the iCAP cell blade can be turned on. You must reboot the partition on
which the iCAP memory is activated for the iCAP changes to take effect.
TiCAP
You can purchase an amount of temporary capacity (TiCAP) time for inactive cores without usage
rights in your iCAP system. TiCAP can be purchased in units of processing days. Temporary capacity
allows one or more inactive cores to be activated for up to the specified period of prepaid
processing time, without requiring permanent usage rights for the cores. For more information on
TiCAP, see TiCAP overview” (page 52).
IMPORTANT: TiCAP is no longer consumed even if any nPartitions are staying at the EFI prompt.
Acquiring and configuring TiCAP
To add temporary capacity to a system that contains iCAP cores (cores without usage rights):
1. Order the required amount of TiCAP for your type of server by submitting a purchase order
to HP. Be sure to specify the system serial number.
After you purchase an amount of temporary capacity, HP sends you a letter that informs you
on the process of how to acquire a temporary capacity codeword and apply it to the system.
2. Acquire the temporary capacity codeword from the Utility Pricing Solutions portal:
http://www.hp.com/go/icap/portal
3. Apply the temporary capacity codeword using the icapmodify -C command, on any
partition of the server, as shown in the following example:
#icapmodify -C

The following codeword has been applied to the complex: Usage rights
codeword for the complex with serial number xxxxxxxxxx. The codeword
sequence number is XXXXXXXXXX. The codeword adjusts core temporary
capacity by 1 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes for a total of 86400 seconds.
Use icapstatus(1M) to see the effect of this codeword.
HP-UX licensing and support with TiCAP
When you purchase TiCAP, the temporary HP-UX license-to-use is included when iCAP cores are
activated using temporary capacity. You might also need software licenses for the nonproprietary
software. Check with your application software vendor for licensing requirements.
Using TiCAP
Auditing of temporary capacity is done at the complex level on iCAP systems that support partitioning
but are not part of a GiCAP group. In a system that contains iCAP cores with the temporary capacity
RTU codeword applied, you can activate one or more cores in a partition and allow them to use
temporary capacity as explained in the following sections.
