Activation of an iCAP cell board
An iCAP cell board is usually assigned to an nPartition; however, the cell board does not participate
in the boot of the nPartition. Activating an iCAP cell board is a two-step process:
1. Set the cell board’s use-on-next-boot flag to y (yes) using the parmodify command.
2. Reboot the nPartition (using the shutdown -r command on HP-UX), or (on HP-UX 11.31
OEUR 0709 or later) a Cell Online Activation.
For example, to change the use-on-next-boot flag to y on the iCAP cell board in cabinet 0, slot 5,
in nPartition 3, execute the following command:
/usr/sbin/parmodify -p 3 -m 0/5::y:
If core usage rights are available in the complex, the number of intended active cores is increased
to as high a number as possible, limited by the number of cores in the newly activated cell board.
The available core usage rights are automatically used in the cell activation. If there are no available
core usage rights, the number of active cores remains the same.
After you have set the cell board’s use-on-next-boot flag to y, and have rebooted the nPartition,
you can use the icapmodify command to activate cores that are listed as Additional cores
that can be assigned with current usage rights (as reported by the icapstatus
command).
Activating an iCAP cell board causes at least one core to become active on that cell board after
reboot.
For details about adding and configuring cells in nPartitions, see the nPartition Administrator's
Guide.
Accidental activation of an iCAP cell board
If you accidentally activate an iCAP cell board, you can deactivate it by following this two-step
procedure:
1. Set the cell board’s use-on-next-boot flag to n (no) by using the parmodify command.
2. Reboot the nPartition, or (on HP-UX 11.31 OEUR 0709 or later) a Cell Online Deactivation.
This step is not necessary if there was no reboot after the activation.
For example, to change the use-on-next-boot flag to n on the iCAP cell board in cabinet 0, slot 5,
in nPartition 3, execute the following command:
/usr/sbin/parmodify -p 3 -m 0/5::n:
In this command, the n flag sets the cell board’s use-on-next-boot flag to “no” and causes the cell
board to not participate in the nPartition when it is booted.
For details about adding and configuring cells in nPartitions, see the nPartition Administrator's
Guide.
