HP Instant Capacity Version 10.x User Guide (762794-001, March 2014)

2. Sign in to the portal using your Passport ID.
If you are a first time user, you must register on this portal to obtain a Passport ID.
3. Click Create codewords.
NOTE: For self enforcement, codewords are not provided but the process used for inventory
tracking mirrors what is used for codewords.
4. Follow the prompts as if you were going to generate a GiCAP code word.
5. Subscribe to receive a mail or keep a record of the transaction.
You can move the usage rights across complexes by disabling cores on one complex and activating
them on another if the total does not exceed the rights purchased.
Case 4 — Temporary capacity
To use temporary capacity in this model of self-enforcement:
1. Go to the HP Utility Pricing Portal at www.hp.com/go/icap/portal.
This portal handles all of the iCAP transactions.
2. Sign in to the portal using your Passport ID.
If you are a first time user, you must register on this portal to obtain a Passport ID.
3. Click Create codewords.
NOTE: For self enforcement, codewords are not provided but the process used for inventory
tracking mirrors what is used for codewords.
4. Follow the prompts as if you were going to generate a TiCAP code word.
5. Subscribe to receive a mail or keep a record of the transaction.
You can distribute the temporary capacity among the partitions use it to activate additional
processors whenever required.
Important considerations
Sizing partitions
Size the partition for maximum cores it might require (this can be more than the available RTUs).
For activating the cores dynamically using iCAP, the cores must be assigned to the partition.
Therefore, the partitions must be over provisioned with the maximum requirement. This consideration
might be simple when creating nPars because they are assigned at the granularity of cell blades
and not cores.
For example, if you know that a vPar may need a maximum of 10 cores at any point in time, create
a vPar with 10 cores. The number of usage rights can be assigned to this vPar after booting it to
HP-UX with iCAP Version 10.00. If the partition is to be assigned with only five usage rights, it
can be done using the iCAP commands, so that only five cores are active on the vPar at any point
in time. iCAP ensures that the number of active cores are equal to assigned usage rights (Intended
Active). You can dynamically activate or deactivate cores limited by the partition size set initially.
Resizing partitions
If a partition has to be resized to change the number of cores that it was originally assigned with,
the cores have to be brought down and re-adjusted. After you re-adjust the assigned cores, HP
recommends you to set the usage rights assigned to the partition to ensure compliance.
Memory iCAP
The iCAP offering on memory is similar to the current offering on legacy Integrity and HP9000
systems. You can purchase an HP Integrity Superdome 2 cell blade with all iCAP memory or all
