HP Instant Capacity Version 10.x User Guide (762794-001, March 2014)

HP Integrity Superdome 2 with dynamic cores
Overview
The iCAP software on the HP Integrity Superdome 2 complex with dynamic cores capability,
performs a compliance check on the complex, to check if the complex meets the iCAP contract.
Usage rights are managed through the application of codewords. The codewords, wherever
applicable, must be obtained from the iCAP portal and applied on the system. The usage rights
(including temporary capacity) are managed at the complex level.
Important considerations
Sizing partitions
With dynamic core capability, partitions are no longer provisioned to meet the maximum
requirement. Partitions can be created with the number of cores required at that point of time and
can be resized whenever required.
NOTE: nPartitions must be provisioned with the maximum number of required cell blades. You
must use the partition manager commands parcreate and parmodify to create and resize the
partitions.
Resizing partitions
To resize or change the number of cores originally assigned, you can add or delete the cores in
the partition. Resizing can be done with zero downtime.
Memory iCAP
The iCAP offering for memory is similar to the current offering on legacy Integrity and HP9000
systems. You can purchase an HP Integrity Superdome 2 cell blade with all iCAP memory or all
active memory. All the inactive memory on an iCAP cell blade has to be activated at the same
time. Until the memory is activated, the iCAP cell blade is considered to be logically powered off.
To comply with the iCAP Terms and Conditions, HP recommends you to power off the iCAP cell
blade that contains iCAP memory. After purchasing enough memory RTUs to activate all of the
iCAP memory on the cell blade, update the iCAP inventory on the HP Utility Pricing Portal.
Installing iCAP on HP Integrity Superdome 2
The process of installation and upgrade of iCAP on HP Integrity Superdome 2 is the same as on
other iCAP supported systems. However, for iCAP Version 10.00 and later, on HP–UX 11i v3 HP
Integrity systems, patch PHCO_40927 is a co-requisite and must be installed.
Upgrading to HP Integrity Superdome 2 with dynamic cores
Case 1 — Upgrading with reboot
1. Note the iCAP inventory and TiCAP/IAC balance in each partition (nPars and vPars) of the
HP Integrity Superdome 2 server with the initial release firmware bits.
2. Update the Utility Pricing Solutions portal such that both the iCAP and portal inventory
information match.
3. Issue the following command in each partition to activate all the cores in all the partitions:
icapmodify s 0
4. Shut down the partitions.
5. Upgrade the firmware to the codeword-enforced iCAP firmware bits. For information on how
to upgrade firmware, see the Update command in the HP Integrity Superdome 2 Onboard
Administrator Command Line Interface User Guide.
