Introduction Local system management is a key aspect of an overall systems management strateg y. In an enterprise environment a common management tool regardless of the hardware platform or the operating system becomes important. Also real-time management of a system becomes crucial requiring an administrator to have a simplified, consolidated, easy to use interface for managing a system. Overview HP System Management Homepage (HP SMH) 1 is the single system management solution for managing HP-UX 11i.
Figure 2 represents the consolidated architectu re of how HP SM H and HP SIM work together. Figure 2.
HP SMH u ses Tomcat, in addition to Apache, on the managed node. While most HP SMH applications a re CGI-based, some others such as partition manager are Java™ applications that require Tomcat to run. However, the HP SM H Java-based applications are accessed in the same wa y as CG I applications. When access to a Java-based application is requested, the HP SM H Apache-based server f orwards requests to Tomcat, which is loaded on demand. 4.
Figure 3. Homepage of HP SMH Benefits HP SMH offers the following features and benefits: • Common cross-platform solution for HP-UX 11i, Wind ows, and Linu x. • HP SMH is bundled with HP-UX 11i Base Operating Environment (BOE). The u ser need not make any configuration changes to sta rt using the application. • HP SMH u ses operating system-based Secu re Sockets Layer (SSL) and host-based authentication to protect web-based system management tools.
• HP SMH offers auto-start and time-out features that the user can configure by using the hpsmh(1M) and smhstartconfig(1M) commands. By default, HP SMH is installed without Apache running on the system. • HP SMH p rovides capability to verify HP SMH softwa re dependency information using the new smhassist command. • HP SMH supports the Mozilla and Internet Explorer web browsers.
Figure 4. Tools page of HP SMH Accounts for Users and Groups The Accounts f or Users and Groups application is used to conf igure and manage user accounts, group accounts, u ser templates, and security attributes on a local and Network Information Service (NIS) system. Features Accounts for Users and Groups enables the user to: • Configure and manage local user accounts on the local HP-UX system. The user can also modify password, security attributes, and secondary g roup information of the local users.
• Configure and manage user templates. The user can also apply user templates while creating user accounts and discard active u ser templates. User templates enable the user to automate much of the tediou s configuration work that must be done when creating new accounts. • Configure security attributes of users and groups using the Accounts for Users and Groups application as it is integrated with the Secu rity Attributes Configuration software.
• Provides the Simple Search option that enables the user to search for error metadata present in the CER. • Provides the Advanced Search option that enables the user to cu stomize the search results. • Provides a list of error information in printable format. • Provides an option to add, modify, and delete custom solutions for errors present in the CER. • Provides an option to trace the processing of EMT.
Network Interfaces Configuration The Network Interfaces Configuration application enables the u ser to configure network interfaces on HP-UX installed systems. The user can manage the network interfaces using the different tabs available.
Peripheral Devices Configuration for Hardware The Peripheral Devices Conf iguration application for ha rdware enables system administrators to view all the devices on a host system and configure the PCI/OLRAD slots for that system. Features Peripheral Devices enables the user to: • View detailed information about cards, devices, and slots, including all available PCI/OLRAD slots in an easy-to- read format. • Add, delete, or replace PCI cards without shutting down the host system.
• Monitor local clu ster status and alerts • Create and modif y local cluster and associated packages • Run and halt nodes and packages • Set up Serviceguard role-based access control • Move packages • View package dependencies • View consolidated syslog and package log files Other features include: • Cluster configu ration wizard • Modular package configuration wizard • Cluster and package conf iguration validation Process Resource Manager HP Process Resource Manager (PRM) is a resource management tool th
or date. Policy changes can be automated so that no operator or administrator action is required.
supports UML P rofile for Core Components (UPCC)-style Serviceguard packages for consolidated logging and conf iguration synchronization. Use the HP SMH System and Consolidated Log Viewer to filter and view a system's local syslog log files. For a system that is also a log consolidator, the System and Consolidated Log Viewer also filters and displays the consolidated logs.
