Simplifying single-system management on HP-UX 11i (SMH) (538076-002; March 2011)

7
HP SMH offers auto-start and time-out features that the user can configure by using the
hpsmh(1M) and smhstartconfig(1M) commands. By default, HP SMH is installed
without Apache running on the system.
HP SMH provides capability to verify HP SMH software dependency information using the
new smhassist command.
HP SMH supports the Mozilla and Internet Explorer web browsers.
HP SMH provides the command preview feature enabling the user to view the commands
before the execution of tasks, facilitating training and usage in scripts.
A majority of the HP SMH applications are localized. Online help for some of the
applications are available in nine languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese,
Korean, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, and Traditional Chinese.
All the key administrative actions are recorded in samlog, which can be viewed through the
samlog viewer in HP SMH.
Supported user interfaces
HP SMH supports web-based GUI, menu-driven TUI, and CLI. A majority of the applications
have a web-based GUI and a menu-driven TUI. Some of the applications have CLIs too. Few
of the HP SMH applications are not web-based. Such applications open using the X-
Windows-based GUI.
The user can access the HP SMH GUI, TUI, and CLI interfaces using the smh command
(/usr/sbin/smh). However, in HP-UX 11iv3 you can also use the sam(1m) command which
behaves the same as smh(1m) command except that the deprecation message is displayed in
the beginning.
When the user executes either the sam or smh command and if the DISPLAY environment
variable is set, HP SMH opens in the default web browser. If the DISPLAY environment
variable is not set, HP SMH opens in the TUI. The user can also open HP SMH directly in a
browser by providing the hostname and the port number in the address, for example,
http://<hostname>:2301
NO TE
Text-based HP SMH only supports the C (English) locale. HP recommends that you set your
locale variables, such as LANG and LC_ALL, to C. A majority of the applications in web-
based HP SMH support multibyte locales.
HP SMH components
The user can take advantage of the capabilities of HP SMH from the Tools page in HP SM H
(in the case of GUI). The Tools page provides entry to the various applications that enable the
administrator to manage the HP-UX system.
