Veritas File System 5.0 Release Notes
New Features
Chapter 1 11
fsvmap: This command determines which data file is resident on a given volume for a multi-volume
file system. This command recovers only the affected files when an unprotected volume is permanently
lost.
Large File Systems and Large File Support
The VxFS 5.0 release is the first release to support Disk Layout Version 7. File system up to 256TB in
sizecan be created on Disk Layout Version 7. However, file system larger than 2 TB can be created only
on a 64-bit kernel on Veritas Volume Manager. A 32 TB file system requires a 2 K block size, a 64 TB
file system requires a 4 K block size, and a 128TB or larger file system requires an 8 K block size. File
systems over 32 terabytes are called extra large file systems and require a license to create. However,
only file system upto 32TB has been qualified and will be supported as of this stage. Also, the HP
OnlineJFS license is required to create file systems over 2 TB and under 32TB. The EBFS license is
required to create file systems over 32TB. This license is bundled with HP's Storage Management and
Cluster File System products. Please contact HP sales representatives for further information about
obtaining this license. An online conversion utility vxupgrade is provided to upgrade existing disk
layouts to Disk Layout Version 7 on mounted file systems.
Cross Platform Data Sharing
Cross-platform Data Sharing (CDS) allows data to be serially shared among heterogeneous systems
where each system has direct access to the physical devices that hold the data. This feature can be used
only in conjunction with the Veritas Volume Manager. For more information, see the VeritasHP-UX 11i
Version 2 Storage Foundation Cross-Platform Data Sharing Administrators Guide. This feature was
introduced with the VxFS 4.1 release on HP-UX. CDS is supported only on VxFS file systems with
Disk Layout Version 6.
There are two new VxFS commands associated with this feature:
fscdsadm : Perform online Cross-Platform Data Sharing operations on a VxFS file system.
NOTE In VxFS 4.1, the fscdstask script was provided to perform the various VxFS CDS
administration tasks. Starting with VxFS 5.0 release, the fscdsadm command should be
used to perform all online CDS tasks on a VxFS file system. The fscdstask script is
deprecated and is provided only for backward compatibility with previous releases.
The support for the fscdstask script will be discontinued in future VxFS releases.
fscdsconv : Make a VxFS file system suitable for migration to another target.
NOTE The fscdstask command provided with VxFS 4.1 for performing online CDS
administration, has been replaced with the fscdsadm command. The fscdstask
command will not be supported in future VxFS releases.
