Veritas File System 5.0 Release Notes (September 2006)

Veritas File System 5.0 Release Notes
Compatibility with previous versions of VxFS
Chapter 116
Veritas File System 4.1 is the last major release to support QuickLog. The Version 6 disk layout does
not support QuickLog. The functionality provided by the Veritas multi-volume support feature replaces
most of the functionality provided by QuickLog.
CFS and snapshot combined support will not be available in future Veritas releases. However, snapshot
feature alone will continue to be available on locally mounted file systems.
Compatibility with previous versions of VxFS
VxFS 5.0 release does not support creating or mounting disk layout Version 1, 2, or 3 file systems. HP
recommends upgrading any previously installed VxFS file system to Disk Layout Version 7 available
with VxFS 5.0.
CAUTION Do not upgrade /stand and / file systems to Disk Layout Version 6 or Disk Layout 7.
The HP-UX boot loader does not understand this layout.
The disk layout of a VxFS file system can be upgraded after installing VxFS 5.0. Use vxupgrade (1M)
command to upgrade the disk layout from Version 4 or 5 to disk layout Version 6, and then upgrade to
Version 7 on a mounted file system. Use vxfsconvert (1M) to convert an unmounted file system to VxFS
Disk Layout Version 7.
NOTE A Disk Layout Version 7 or Disk Layout Version 6 file system created with VxFS 5.0
software is not accessible if the VxFS 5.0 file system software is removed and the
system is reverted to Base VxFS 3.5, which is the default suported with HP-UX 11.23
system.
A Disk Layout Version 7 file system created with VxFS 5.0 software is not accessible if
the VxFS 5.0 file system software is removed and VxFS 4.1 is re-installed. VxFS 4.1
does not support DLV 7.
NOTE VxFS file systems must be cleanly unmounted before upgrading to the Veritas File System
5.0 release from any previous release.
