1 Veritas Volume Manager 5.0.1 Release Notes This chapter discusses new features, licenses, system requirements, compatibility with previous releases, and known problems with Veritas Volume Manager 5.0.1 which is supported on systems running HP-UX 11i v3.
Following are the enhancements to the DMP feature: ◦ Dynamic Multipathing Attributes Now Persistent Dynamic Multipathing attributes are now persistent across reboots. These attributes include standby, active, preferred, primary, secondary, nopreferred, and nomanual. Use the vxdmpadm setattr command to set the attributes. The attributes are stored in the /etc/vx/dmppolicy.info file.
◦ Enhanced I/O Statistics The following enhancements are now made to the I/O statistics: – Queued and Erroneous I/O counts The vxdmpadm iostat show command now provides options to display queued I/O counts (using the -q option) and erroneous I/O counts (using the -e option). These options are applicable for the DMP node, path, and controller. – Filtering Zero Entries The vxdmpadm iostat show command now provides the -z option to filter entities for which all data entries are zero.
◦ New Log File Location for DMP Events The new log file for DMP events is the /var/adm/vx/dmpevents.log file. For backward compatibility, the previous log file, /etc/vx/dmpevents.log, is symbolically linked to the /var/adm/vx/dmpevents.log file. ◦ Extended Device Attributes Displayed in the vxdisk list Command The vxdisk list command now displays extended device attributes, such as hardware mirrors, for certain arrays.
the vxdmpadm setattr arraytype array_type command sets the attribute for all array types derived from the given array_type. ◦ Support for ALUA JBOD Devices The Device Discovery Layer (DDL) now provides improved support for Just a bunch of disks' (JBOD) devices to include Asymmetric Logical Unit Access (ALUA) JBOD devices. DMP now provides immediate basic support for any ALUA-compliant array, however full support still requires an ASL.
• Campus Cluster enhancements The campus cluster feature provides the capability of mirroring volumes across sites, with hosts connected to storage at all sites through a Fibre Channel network. In this release, the following enhancements have been made to the campus cluster feature: ◦ Site Tagging of disks or Enclosures Enhancements to the vxdisk command related to site tagging are now available: ◦ – Site tagging operations on multiple disks or enclosures are now supported.
Software Requirements • OS Version HP-UX 11i v3 0903 OEUR (or later) • Patches Required For information on required and recommended patches before installing VxVM 5.0.1, see Veritas 5.0.1 Installation Guide HP-UX 11i v3. NOTE: An SG-SMS license is required to use an ISP. For information on all the features supported by the SG-SMS license, see Table 4 (page 12). VEA Graphical User Interface and System Management Home Page (SMH) The Veritas™ Enterprise Administrator (VEA) provides a Java-based graphical user interface for managing VxVM. VEA has two parts: a server and a client. The server must run on the system running VxVM.
• DMP issues of Veritas Volume Manager Following are the limitations of DMP: ◦ Handling intermittent failures in paths The dmp_health_time and dmp_path_age tunables control how DMP handles intermittently failing paths. The default values of dmp_health_time and dmp_path_age are 60 and 300 seconds, respectively. The value of dmp_health_time represents the minimum time in seconds for which a path must stay healthy.
NOTE: For information on the Known Problems and Workarounds in VxVM 5.0 in the HP-UX 11i v3 operating system, see Veritas Volume Manager 5.0 Release Notes, HP-UX 11i v3, First Edition, May 2008 available at http://www.docs.hp.com. • Problem HP-UX 11i v3 guests may panic while booting with virtual disks that have logical volume or file backing stores with names that are 55 characters or greater.
Workaround Clear the failing flag using the vxedit command. • Upgrading external ASLs and APMs The Storage Foundation 5.0.1 release only supports upgrading external ASL and Array Policy Module (APM) packages from release 5.0 or later. If your system uses any existing ASLs and APMs from the 4.x release, you may need to download a 5.0 version of the ASL and APM.. Check the latest array support information to determine whether an updated ASL or APM package is available for your arrays.
Use Base-VxVM-501 version B.05.01.02 or later to perform the upgrade. • Problem When the Veritas Enterprise Administrator is started from the command line using the /opt/VRTSob/bin/vea& command, the following message is logged in the /var/adm/ syslog/syslog.log file: Allocator: INFO:File /etc/default/vxassist: Can not open Workaround The message does not impact any functionality and can be safely ignored. There is no workaround for this issue.
