vparreset2(1M)
For OA Based Partition Management Systems
vparreset2(1M)
NAME
vparreset - reset a virtual partition
SYNOPSIS
Invoked from operating system (OS):
vparreset -f -p vpar_id
[-h | -t]
Invoked from Onboard Administrator (OA):
vparreset -f { -p vpar_id -N npar_id |
-p npar_id:vpar_id }
[
-h | -t]
Platform Support Remarks
This
vparreset describes functionality on systems with Onboard Administrator (OA) based parti-
tion management. For vparreset on systems not running OA based partition management,
refer to vparreset1 (1M) by typing man vparreset1
.
DESCRIPTION
The
vparreset command simulates, at the virtual partition level, the hard reset (ReSet, RS) and soft
reset (Transfer Of Control, TOC) operations supported by server management processor commands.
Unintentional use of the
vparreset
command has serious consequences. Therefore, the user is
required to confirm the operation with the
-f (force) option.
Options and Arguments
vparreset recognizes the following command line options and arguments:
-f Specifies the force option. Required.
-p vpar_id Specifies the virtual partition to be reset. vpar_id can be specified either as a name or
number. Required.
When invoked from the OS, the command resets the specified virtual partition of the
local nPartition.
When invoked from the OA, the vpar_id should be specified using the npar_id
:vpar_id
format or used along with the
-N option. When specified in the npar_id :
vpar_id format,
npar_id and vpar_id can either be a number or name. The command resets the specified
virtual partition of the specified nPartition.
-h Simulates a hard (RS) reset instead of a TOC. This option inhibits the autoboot behavior,
as does the shutdown -h command. Therefore vparreset -h can be used to break
out of a reboot loop. Because vparreset -h overrides the autoboot setting for the
specified virtual partition, the virtual partition must be manually restarted using vpar-
boot.
With the
-h option, the virtual partition operating system is abruptly shutdown and no
operating system crash dump is saved. Therefore, HP recommends using the -t (soft
reset) option instead of the -h option to save a crash dump when resetting.
-t Simulates a TOC reset. The -t option is the default operation of the command, applied
if neither the -h nor -t option is specified.
When invoked from OA, the
-t option is equivalent to another OA command: INIT
PARTITION nPar_Id:vPar_Id.
The
-t and -h options cannot both be specified in the same command.
-N npar_id Specifies the nPartition to which the virtual partition belongs to. npar_id can be
specified either as a number or a name. This option is mandatory for the command
invoked from OA.
SECURITY RESTRICTIONS
When invoked from the OS, this command is restricted to processes owned by superuser having appropri-
ate
parperm privilege. An OA user with operator privilege level or above can reset virtual partitions
from the OA.
