6 Testing Recovery Groups
Overview
There are two ways to test Recovery Groups at the Recovery Site. The first is to perform a Planned Failover
scenario (see “Planned Failovers” for more information).
The second way is to test individual Recovery Groups at the Recovery Site. At the Recovery Site, the logical
servers being managed by Insight Recovery are known as Recovery logical servers.
Normally, a Recovery logical server cannot be activated except by invoking Change local site to Primary in
Insight Recovery. For testing purposes, an administrator can place a Recovery Group in Maintenance Mode
and then activate the recovery logical server belonging to that Recovery Group using Insight Dynamics --
VSE. Also, following an import of the configuration at the Recovery Site, all Recovery Groups that were
imported will have Maintenance Mode enabled so that they can be tested. Likewise, a Recovery Group
created at the recovery site will have Maintenance Mode enabled.
Once testing is completed of all imported/created Recovery Groups at the Recovery Site, Maintenance Mode
must be disabled for those Recovery Groups.
It is highly recommended that Recovery Group failover at the Recovery site is well tested prior to disabling
the maintenance mode on the imported/created Recovery Groups.
Testing Recovery Groups Using Maintenance Mode
Step 1: At the Primary Site
1. Using Insight Dynamics -- VSE, gracefully shut down and deactivate the logical server of the Recovery
Group to be tested.
Step 2: At the Recovery Site
1. From the CommandView EVA server user interface, failover the Storage Replication Group (
DR Group
)
that is associated with the Recovery Group being tested.
If the logical server is virtual machine (VM) based, you must use VMware Virtual Center to rescan the
storage. Then use Insight Dynamics -- VSE to refresh the VM-based logical server resources and expose
the newly available datastore.
2. From HP Insight Recovery, click the Recovery Group tab, select the Recovery Group being tested, then
click Enable Maintenance Mode. This step can be skipped if the Recovery Group already has
Maintenance Mode enabled due to a recently completed Site Import or Recovery Group Create
command.
3. Use Insight Dynamics -- VSE to activate the logical Server and to verify that it is working properly.
4. When done testing and verifying the logical server that is part of the Recovery Group, shutdown and
deactivate the logical server using Insight Dynamics -- VSE.
5. From HP Insight Recovery, click the Recovery Group tab, select the Recovery Group you just tested, then
click Disable Maintenance Mode.
Step 3: At the Primary Site
1. From the CommandView EVA server user interface, failover (back to the Primary Site) the Storage
Replication Group (
DR Group
) that is associated with this logical server.
If the logical server is virtual machine(VM) based, you must use VMware Virtual Center to rescan the
storage. Then use Insight Dynamics -- VSE to refresh the VM-based logical server resources in order to
expose the newly available datastore.
2. Activate the logical server using Insight Dynamics -- VSE.
Notes
After performing a Site Import or a Recovery Group Create at the Recovery site, all imported/created
Recovery Groups will be in Maintenance Mode. This is so you can test each of the imported/created
