screen frequency (screen ruling)
The spacing of the lines in a halftone image, usually measured in
lines per inch (lpi). Each line is composed of a number of half-
tone dots.
secondary color
Color obtained by mixing two primary colors.
shadows
The darkest areas in an original or an image, represented in a
halftone by the largest dots. The dot area of shadows ranges from
about 80% to 100%. Compare with highlights.
softproof
An image on a computer monitor used to verify the colors and
layout of an image or document.
spectrophotometer
The instrument used to measured the special transmittance or
reflectance of specimens. The ColorMark Calibrator is an exam-
ple of a spectrophotometer.
subtractive primaries
Cyan, yellow, and magenta are the primary colors of ink used by
ink jet printers and offset presses. See also CMYK.
TIFF
Tagged Image File Formata file format for exchanging bitmap
images between applications or between computer platforms.
transfer function
A mathematical function that can be represented by a curve and
that transforms density levels on input to density levels on out-
put. See also calibration curve.
transparent original
An original that is printed on a light-sensitive support through
which light can pass. A slide is a transparent original. Compare
with reflective original.
